Top-Ranked Mt. Zion Stops Harvard-Westlake

Jarron Collins had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Harvard-Westlake High boys’ basketball team in the championship game of Las Vegas tournament Monday night, but the Wolverines fell to top-ranked Mt. Zion Christian Academy of Durham, N.C., 63-59.

Jason Collins, Jarron’s twin brother, had 17 points for Harvard-Westlake (10-1) and Ryan Smiley added 13 points, but the Wolverines couldn’t overcome Mt. Zion (12-0), the No. 1-ranked team in the nation according to the National Prep basketball poll.

Tracy McGrady had 24 points for Mt. Zion and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Mt. Zion hit 57.4% of its shots and Harvard-Westlake made 46.9% of its attempts.

The Harvard-Westlake loss snapped a 32-game winning streak dating back to last season for the No. 21-ranked Wolverines and came after a 64-38 semifinal thrashing of No. 13 Mater Dei (8-1) earlier in the day.

Jason Collins had 23 points--while making seven of nine shots--12 rebounds and four blocked shots in that game and Jarron added 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

Harvard-Westlake made 21 of 39 shots and 20 of 26 free throws and held previously unbeaten Mater Dei (8-1) to a shooting percentage of 31.8%.

Rico Cabrera had 10 points and three assists for the Wolverines and Smiley added nine points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals.
