Boller Makes Fast Impact, Leads Hart to Title, 37-29

Candace Boller is quickly making up for lost time.

The senior forward scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Hart High girls’ basketball team to a 37-29 victory over Glendora St. Lucy’s in the championship game of the Simi Valley tournament Saturday night at Simi Valley High.

After missing the Indians’ first eight games to concentrate on club volleyball, Boller has 48 points and 26 rebounds in two games. She was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Against St. Lucy’s (5-4), Boller had 15 points in the second and third quarters. It was the first Simi Valley title for Hart (7-3), which was runner-up in 1988.

Leading, 32-29, with one minute 40 seconds to play, the Indians made five of six free throws in the final 25 seconds.

Hart made only 13 of 38 shots and had 18 turnovers.

St. Lucy’s made 10 of 38 shots and committed 19 turnovers, 16 in the first three quarters.

Simi Valley 77, Channel Islands JV 20--The Pioneers (7-3) scored the game’s first 15 points and opened the second half with a 19-0 run in the third-place game.

The Channel Islands junior varsity team filled in for the Raider varsity squad, which was playing at the same time in the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Ventura 64, Chaminade 17--Rhiannon Potkey scored 14 points and Anita Richman came off the bench to add 10 for the Cougars in the fifth-place game.

Erin Oshita had 10 points and Kristine Gleisberg grabbed nine rebounds for Ventura (7-2).

The Eagles are 4-5.

Newbury Park 54, Pasadena 41--Tawni Yamauchi had 11 points and Nadine Levsey had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Panthers (3-7) in the seventh-place game.

Canyon 65, Burbank 51--Valerie Wiggins scored 20 points on nine-of-16 shooting and had eight rebounds for the Cowboys (4-5) in the ninth-place game.

Teni Markarian had 13 points for Burbank (2-8).
