Brea Olinda Falls to Pickerington in the Semifinals

Pickerington (Ohio) got 30 points from its bench in the first half, led by 24 at halftime and scored a 65-34 victory Saturday over Brea Olinda in the semifinals of the Lady Tiger Holiday Classic at Pickerington High.

Pickerington, ranked second in the nation by USA Today, led 8-7 midway through the first quarter when Brea Gray came off the bench and put away Brea Olinda. Gray made three consecutive three-pointers in a 20-0 run against the Ladycats, ranked fifth in the national poll.

Pickerington plays 14th-ranked Middle Village (N.Y.) Christ the King, a 73-62 winner over No. 18 Fredrick (Md.) St. John’s at Prospect Hall in the other semifinal, for the tournament championship.

Rochelle Anthony scored 13 points for the Ladycats (9-1). Brea Olinda plays St. John’s in tonight’s third place game.

In the Costa Mesa tournament:

San Clemente 64, Westminster 30--Colleen Turnbull contributed 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists, and Taryn Commins had 10 for eighth-ranked San Clemente. The Tritons advance to the finals on Monday.

Tustin 50, Las Vegas (Nev.) Silverado 22--Tustin (6-6) outscored Siverado 10-2, in the first quarter and 13-1, in the fourth quarter to advance to the consolation championship. Shamekia Perkins made four three pointers and scored 18 points for the Tillers.

In the Garden Grove tournament:

Foothill 52, Inglewood 47--Robyn Templeton scored 22 points as Foothill won the tournament championship. Kerry Brunansky scored 11 points and had 15 rebounds for the Knights (7-5).

Bolsa Grande 38, Garden Grove 24--Mary Petrie scored 19 points as Bolsa Grande (6-5) won the third-place game. Lorena Davis scored 10 points for Garden Grove (4-8).

Paramount 40, Sunny Hills 31--Cheryl Galvin scored 15 points, including three three-pointers, in the loss for Sunny Hills (1-9).

In the Greene County (Tenn.) basketball tournament:

Woodbridge 79, T.W. Josey 53--Cathy Joens hit 10 of 17 from the field to lead second-ranked Woodbridge (8-3) with 23 points. Krissy Duperron scored 22 points, hitting seven of 11 from the field and grabbing seven rebounds. Debby Caine gave out a game-high 11 assists and added six points.

In the Laguna Beach tournament:

Irvine 46, Brethren Christian 45--Irvine battled back from a 24-8 deficit at halftime and outscored Brethren Christian, 38-21, in the second half to win the tournament. Brandy Marcus scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half and Jami Allred scored nine of her 12 points in the half for the Vaqueros. Rachael MacDonald scored 18 points for the Warriors.

El Toro 59, Laguna Beach 29--Giuliani Mendiola scored 20 points, nine of them in the third quarter, and made three three-pointers for El Toro in the third-place game. April Chambers scored 10 points and Chrissy Chambers had 14 for Laguna Beach.

Orange Lutheran 60, Long Beach St. Anthony’s 40--Orange Lutheran outscored St. Anthony’s 22-6 in the third quarter and Molly Slane scored 10 of her 17 points in the quarter for Lancers. Polly Castanis and Lindsay Wetzler each scored 10 points for Orange Lutheran.

Western 45, Trabuco Hills 39--Western outscored Trabuco Hills, 18-13, in the fourth quarter. Adrienne Ratajczak scored 17 points for Western. Emily Deeley scored seven of her 15 points in the fourth quarter for Trabuco Hills.

In the Santa Maria Righetti tournament:

University 40, Lompoc Cabrillo 39--Down 39-35 with under 30 seconds remaining, Fala Sauanoa and Amy McCoy each hit a three-pointer to clinch the victory for University (6-5) as Cabrillo (2-8) missed two free throws with one second left on the clock. Jerri Armendariz scored 23 points in the victory.

In an earlier game, University rallied from a 39-33 deficit to defeat Rancho Alamitos (2-7), 50-45.

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Corona del Mar 67, Saddleback 62--Corona del Mar battled back from a 28-26 deficit at halftime and outscored Saddleback (2-8), 41-34, in the second half. Lindsay Warmington scored 14 of her 19 points in the second half for Corona del Mar (1-5). Elisa Hernandez made nine of 11 free throws and scored 25 points for Saddleback.
