Degnan Quits Football Post at Alemany

Pat Degnan has resigned as Alemany High football coach after five seasons.
Alemany was 8-39-3 during Degnan’s tenure, while competing in the Southern Section Division I Del Rey League. The Indians were 1-9 last season, fifth in league at 1-4. Alemany’s only victory came against Crespi in the season finale.
Degnan cited personal reasons for his decision. His wife recently took a job in the San Fernando Valley, requiring the couple to commute daily from Lancaster.
“Our little girl starts first grade next year, and with both of us commuting, I don’t want her going from school to day care, school to day care,” Degnan said. “When my wife was working up here, she was five minutes away from our daughter.”
Degnan will continue to teach math at Alemany but is interested in finding a teaching-coaching position closer to home.
Alemany Athletic Director Dudley Rooney hopes to fill the coaching position by April.
Degnan is the second high school football coach from the region to announce his resignation this week. On Monday, Saugus assistant principal Randy Parker said Jack Bowman is leaving his post.
Bowman led the Centurions to the playoffs in five of his six seasons, including a berth in the Southern Section Division II quarterfinals the past three seasons.
The Centurions finished third in league and had a 6-6 record.
