Villa Park Has Hot Start, Then Falls to Foothill

Although Villa Park scored the first 10 points of the game, Foothill rallied to post a 43-35 victory in a Century League girls’ basketball game Thursday at Villa Park High.

Robyn Templeton scored 18 points and Kerry Brunansky had 10 points and 15 rebounds for Foothill (9-5, 1-0 in league), which trailed, 23-17, at halftime.

The Knights took control by outscoring the Spartans (4-10, 0-1), 12-2, in the third quarter.

In other Century League games:

Canyon 44, Santa Ana Valley 37--Sara Mohkami had 15 points and six steals for Canyon (10-6, 1-0).

El Modena 46, Orange 29--Christina Hernandez scored 13 points for El Modena (8-4, 1-0).

In the Academy League:

Liberty Christian 43, Orangewood Academy 30--Stephanie Wu had 19 points and 11 rebounds and Felicia Jao added 15 points and four steals for host Liberty Christian (6-4, 1-0).

Crystal Holmes scored 16 points for Orangewood Academy (2-8, 0-1).

Connelly 38, St. Margaret’s 33--Julia Adams scored 12 for host Connelly (6-5, 1-0). Abbey Arnold scored 12 points for St. Margaret’s (3-6, 0-1).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 52, Buena Park 29--Bethany Ferr had 15 points and 10 rebounds for host Fullerton (3-11, 1-0).

Veronica Velasco scored 10 points for the Coyotes (5-9, 0-1).

Sonora 56, La Habra 42--Sarah Fister scored 14 points and Kristi DeOliva added 12 for visiting Sonora (9-8, 1-0). Nori McCrystal scored 16 points for La Habra.

Troy 68, Sunny Hills 33--Heidi Hardeman had 21 points, 13 rebounds, six steals and four assists for Troy (12-3, 1-0), which made 32 of 47 free throws.

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 62, Santa Ana 15--Anna Lembke had 18 points and 18 rebounds and Tracy Lindquist had 14 points and six assists for sixth-ranked Ocean View (13-3, 2-0), which shut out Santa Ana in the first quarter, 17-0.

Rosary 67, Tustin 54--Sarah Belavic had 17 points and 10 assists and Maggie Barnett scored 20 points for Rosary (6-10, 1-1). Brook Brown had 18 points and 19 rebounds for Tustin (7-9, 0-2).

Westminster 54, Saddleback 39--Erin Moore scored 21 points in a victory for Westminster (2-0 in league). Pradjot Kaur scored 21 points for Saddleback (3-10, 1-1).

In the Olympic League:

Brethren Christian 52, Whittier Christian 14--After missing five games because of an ankle injury, forward Cindy Oparah had 18 points and nine rebounds for Brethren Christian (11-3, 1-0).

Ontario Christian 43, Orange Lutheran 41 (OT)--Polly Castanis had 17 points including five three-pointers, all in the second half, for Orange Lutheran (3-11, 0-1), which rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit to send the game to overtime.

Lindsay Wetzler made two free throws with 14 seconds remaining in regulation to tie it, 35-35. But Annie Musser scored with four seconds remaining in overtime for Ontario Christian (7-6, 0-1) to make it 43-41 and Orange Lutheran did not get another shot off.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 67, Dana Hills 29--Jenny Jennings scored 29 points and made a school-record nine three-pointers for No. 7 Capistrano Valley (10-4, 1-0). Jennings breaks Alicia Farr’s previous record of eight three-pointers in a game. Natasha Combs added 20 points for Capistrano Valley.

San Clemente 72, Trabuco Hills 24--Kirsten Quade scored 11 of her 17 points in the third quarter and Taryn Commins and Kelley Kruger each added 12 points for the host Tritons (12-4, 1-0).

In nonleague games:

Bellflower 40, Kennedy 28--Chaunita Smith scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half for Bellflower (13-2), which finally pulled away in the fourth quarter. Smith, who also had 10 rebounds, helped Bellflower outscore Kennedy, 16-7, in the final period.

Melanie Nakamura scored eight points for Kennedy (7-8), which trailed, 24-21, after three quarters.

Cypress 57, La Mirada 26--Jennifer Laster scored 14 points, including three three-pointers for host Cypress (11-5).

Downey 60, Savanna 44--Shannon Pendergraft scored 20 points and Nargis Amiry had 13 points and 10 rebounds for host Savanna (3-11).
