From the mouths of . . .: The Moorpark High boys’ basketball team, a preseason favorite to win the Frontier League title, now will likely watch Santa Clara capture its 13th consecutive league championship.

Before the Musketeers (16-8, 4-3 in league play) played host to Santa Paula on Jan. 14, Moorpark forward Kevin Lawrence was quoted as saying that his team would win the league championship and didn’t intend to lose another game this season.

Oops! Moorpark was blown out by the Cardinals, fell at Santa Clara and lost to Santa Paula again on Tuesday.

“It’s nice to have confidence in yourself but I think we’ve found that all your talking needs to be done on the court,” Moorpark Coach Tim Bednar said.

Bidding war: A walk-on role on TV’s “Murphy Brown” and a piece of The Forum floor signed by Wilt Chamberlain are two of the prizes that will be available at a silent auction during Agoura High’s baseball season-opening banquet on Feb. 7 at the Westlake Village Hyatt.

But the main attraction will be San Francisco Giant outfielder Barry Bonds, the guest speaker.

The daughter of agent Dennis Gilbert, who represents Bonds, is a freshman soccer player at Agoura. Baseball Coach Bruce Beck said she wanted to help the baseball team.

What next?: High school soccer matches in the region have been postponed this season because of rain, snow . . . and a gas leak.

Last Thursday’s Channel League boys’ match between Dos Pueblos and host Oxnard was called off after an hour’s delay when a gas line ruptured near the front of the Oxnard campus.

While hundreds of students, including the Yellowjacket soccer team, were gathered on the football field, the Dos Pueblos team bus sat stranded on a side street cordoned off by police.

“We could see [Dos Pueblos] but we weren’t allowed to walk over and talk to them,” Oxnard Coach Glen Grago said. “Eventually, the bus just went back home.”

Surprise, surprise: The La Reina High girls’ basketball team unexpectedly used the three-point shot last Thursday to hand two-time defending Tri-Valley League champion Fillmore its second league loss in three seasons.

Regent Catherine Fontecha made three of five three-point baskets and Susanna Murley was three of six.

“Normally, if either of them hits one a game, that’s normal,” Coach Alison Sain said. “I guess it was the adrenaline that made them step up.”
