SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Whether it was a picture-perfect goal by Casey Hamel or aggressive goalkeeping by Riki-Ann Serrins, top-seeded Santa Margarita made few mistakes Tuesday in its 2-0 victory over host Woodbridge and advanced to Thursday’s Division II girls’ soccer quarterfinals.

“Of the three games that we played them, that is the best I’ve seen them play,” said Woodbridge Coach William Bell, who’s team faced Santa Margarita twice in Sea View League play. “That was not our best performance and when you play Santa Margarita, you have to play your best.”

Hamel, a freshman, scored what turned out to be the winning goal on a corner kick 14 minutes into the game. Hamel drilled a power shot that curved neatly into the far corner of the goal. The shot was something Santa Margarita Coach Chuck Morales said the team worked on for more than a half hour Monday, knowing his team would be playing on a narrower than normal field. It gave the Eagles a 1-0 halftime lead.

“That was an awesome shot,” said Bell. “I was going to go over there and congratulate her myself.”

The first half was all Santa Margarita (13-1-3). The Eagles played a half-field control game, keeping the ball the majority of the half and outshooting the Warriors 6-2. Woodbridge (15-10-3) had an opportunity to score when Coral Bain slammed a shot from the left side of the goal, but Serrins dived to her right and pulled the ball to the ground.

In the second half, Santa Margarita put the game away in the 55th minute, when Erica Perrotta scored from 30 yards, sailing the ball over the head of Woodbridge goalkeeper Sandra Martinez.

Serrins, who finished the game with five saves, sealed the victory late in the game, making two saves in a crowd of Warriors in front of the Eagles’ goal.

“[Riki-Ann] was the man,” said Morales of his senior goalkeeper. “What goalie is going to jump into a mess like that and go for the ball. You need to have a stud like that back there.”

Santa Margarita will face Mission Viejo Thursday in the quarterfinals.
