The three-point shooting of Daniel and Brian Bobik and the inside dominance of center Jim Newton powered Newbury Park High to a 70-46 victory over Moorpark in a Southern Section Division II-A second-round basketball game Tuesday night at Newbury Park.

Newton, a 6-foot-9 senior center, had 17 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks. Daniel Bobik, a junior guard, scored 21 points, including five three-point baskets in the first half.

Brian Bobik, a sophomore guard, had 10 points, including three three-pointers.

Newbury Park (19-8), co-champion of the Marmonte League, will play at Dominguez in the quarterfinals Friday.

“We shoot the ball pretty well from the perimeter,” Newbury Park Coach Steve Johnson said. “We’ve got Big Jim down low and a lot of good shooters all around. We were ready and excited to come out and play a team from our area.”

The game was not much of a contest after the Panthers took a 26-11 first-quarter lead.

In the second quarter, Daniel Bobik made four three-point baskets to help the Panthers extend their lead to 49-18. His final three-pointer just beat the halftime buzzer.

But Daniel Bobik cooled in the second half. He was held scoreless while his brother began connecting from long distance.

Daniel said Brian always has been the long-distance shooter in the family.

“He always was a little bit better shooter than I was,” Daniel said. “We used to go at it out in the backyard. But this year, I’m a lot better and I have a lot more confidence.”

Newton scored the majority of his points in the lane. He had 13 by halftime and sat out much of the fourth quarter.

“My shots are starting to fall for me,” Newton said.

Moorpark (18-11) was unable to mount a consistent attack. Junior forward Kevin Lawrence led the Musketeers with 16 points and junior Byron Burnette had 10.
