Harvard-Westlake, Wilson Hot; Montgomery, Amat Not

Share

HOTTEST TEAMS

* Harvard-Westlake: The Wolverines should be in a higher division, but they looked awesome in lopsided victories over Northview and Compton Centennial. Jason Collins needs 77 rebounds to break Southern Section record for a career.

* Long Beach Wilson: The Bruins made the playoffs as an at-large entry from the Moore League. They then upset Los Alamitos and Capistrano Valley.

BIGGEST UPSETS

* Chaminade 62, Bishop Mongtomery 60: The Eagles pulled the biggest shocker in the first round when Justin Stewart scored the winning basket at the buzzer last Friday. Third-seeded Bishop Montgomery figured to battle Harvard-Westlake for the Division III-A title.

* San Bernardino 85, Bishop Amat 71: The usually reliable Del Rey League hasn’t fared well in the playoffs. First, Bishop Mongtomery was upset and then Bishop Amat was eliminated by a team with a losing record.

PUTTING ON A SHOW

* Michelle Greco, Crescenta Valley: Greco already is among the leading scorers in the state, but she pulled down the first quadruple-double of her career after finishing with 24 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals in a 78-27 victory over Nogales on Saturday.

* Brett Michael, Simi Valley: Freshmen seldom make an impact on teams from large schools, but Michael led the Pioneers with 24 points in a 53-46 playoff victory over Santa Monica on Tuesday.

WORTH NOTING

* Southern California is considered to have one of the most talented senior classes in the nation. That may explain why five local players were selected to play in the McDonald’s All-American game on March 29 at the Air Force Academy. The players include Baron Davis of Crossroads, Jason and Jarron Collins of Harvard-Westlake, Eric Chenowith of Villa Park and Chris Burgess of Woodbridge.

* The Mater Dei boys aren’t the the same without point guard Kevin Augustine. Augustine sat out of Tuesday’s game against Dana Hills because of a knee injury and the Monarchs struggled to a 52-45 victory.

* Crescenta Valley’s John Goffredo said his team’s failure to make the boys’ playoffs didn’t influence his decision to step down as coach after 19 seasons. His record is 313-171.
