SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Chris McMillan’s only basket of the game, a three-pointer with eight seconds left in regulation, tied the score and gave Brea Olinda an opportunity to pull out an 89-87 overtime victory over San Bernardino Friday night in the Division II-A quarterfinals.

San Bernardino went on a 14-5 run at the end of the third quarter to take a 65-56 lead.

The Wildcats bounced back but were still down by three with 17 seconds left when Jason Skrifvars rebounded a missed free throw by San Bernardino’s Kevin Richardson. McMillan, the team’s leading scorer in Tuesday’s victory, atoned for his 12 missed shots Friday by hitting the tying basket.

“We were able to come back from nine down because of the great defensive adjustment by assistant coach Bob Terry,” Coach Gene Lloyd said. “We switched from a soft zone to a man-to-man press.”

Brea Olinda opened the fourth quarter by outscoring San Bernardino, 8-2, with Sean Wink and Skrifvars each scoring two baskets.

Baskets by Reid Carlson with 47 seconds left in overtime and Skrifvars with 17 seconds gave Brea Olinda (26-3) an 89-85 lead and a school-record 20 consecutive victory.

The Wildcats will host the Lakewood Artesia Tuesday night at Valencia.

Wink, who had 12 of Brea’s first 14 points, finished with a team-high 27. Carlson had 21 points for the Wildcats. Skrifvars had 24 rebounds and McMillan contributed 11 assists.

San Bernardino ended its season 14-14.
