Kennedy Makes Matadors Winners in Las Vegas, 11-7

Cal State Northridge built a nine-run lead after 6 1/2 innings and defeated Nevada Las Vegas, 11-7, on Saturday for its first victory in four games at the UNLV tournament.

Adam Kennedy slugged his fourth home run of the tournament for Northridge (14-7-1). He had three hits and five runs batted in.

Jose Miranda had three hits and three RBIs, Cesar Martinez had three hits and two RBIs and Andy Wilson had two hits and scored four runs for the Matadors.

Left-hander Benny Flores (4-1) struck out nine in seven innings.

In other baseball games:

Pepperdine 6, CS Los Angeles 2--Andy Shibilo (2-2) pitched eight scoreless innings, striking out eight and allowing four hits for the Waves (6-10) in a nonconference game at Pepperdine.

Rob Reid collected three hits, and David Matranga and Mark Lopez each had two hits and two RBIs.

Cal Lutheran 28-17, Occidental 2-2--The Kingsmen had 48 hits in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.

Tom McGee hit three home runs for Cal Lutheran (12-2, 9-0), two in the first game. The Tigers (3-13, 2-7) had 10 hits and six errors in the two games.

Canyons 27, Pierce 4--The Cougars scored seven runs in the first inning and breezed in a Western State Conference game at Pierce.

Jim Landress had two hits and two RBIs for the Brahmas (7-11, 0-2).

Rio Hondo 3-15, Antelope Valley 1-7--David Nichols had two doubles for the Marauders in the first game of a Foothill Conference doubleheader at Antelope Valley.

Oxnard 15, Santa Barbara 4--Matt Buttell had four hits, including a double and a triple, and drove in two runs for the Condors in a WSC game at Santa Barbara.

Mike Muller and Jack Wilson each had three hits and two RBIs for the Condors (8-8, 1-1) and Mike Corral (3-1) did not allow an earned run in 6 1/3 innings.

Concordia 11-4, The Master’s 9-2-- Chris Kollman had three hits and scored three runs for Master’s (6-13) in the doubleheader at Concordia.

Glendale 15, Valley 6--Sheldon Philip-Guide was four for five with five RBIs for Glendale (12-5, 1-1) in a WSC game at Valley.

Karl Castro and Freddie Sanchez each had three hits and scored two runs for the Vaqueros.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Riverside 79, The Master’s 70--Mike Penberthy led Master’s (19-10) with 21 points in a nonconference game at UC Riverside (19-10).

Jerome Joseph added 19 points and Leo Gorauskas scored 13.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Idaho State 70, CS Northridge 49--Lisa Vaillacourt scored 11 points in a Big Sky Conference game at Idaho State that was the regular-season finale for Northridge (4-23, 2-14).

WOMEN’S TRACK

USA Track & Field Championships--Beth Burton of Cal State Northridge finished fifth in the 20-pound weight throw in the meet at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

Burton’s throw of 58 feet 8 3/4 inches was well off the school record of 67-0 3/4, which she set to win the Big Sky Conference indoor championships on Feb. 22.

South Carolina’s Crystal Browlee, a 1993 graduate of Westlake High, finished fourth with a throw of 61-2 3/4.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Pepperdine 8, Utah 1--The No. 8-ranked Waves (6-2) overpowered Utah by winning every doubles match and five of six singles matches in a nonconference match at Pepperdine.

Isabela Petrov, Zsofia Csapo and Annabel Rognon each posted victories in both singles and doubles, with Petrov defeating Linda Engblom, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles.
