Local Operators Do Well at State Awards

Orange County tourism operators made a strong showing at the 1997 California Tourism Awards ceremony last month in Sacramento.

The big hardware, known as the Governor’s Tourism Award, went to the Disneyland Resort for its success in hyping the farewell season of the Main Street Electrical Parade. The Guv also saluted Disney for its plans to enshrine the California dream in its second theme park, opening in Anaheim in 2001, which will be called Disney’s California Adventure,

“We liked the name,” quipped Poimiroo.

Disneyland likewise took home awards for “Best Newspaper Advertisement” and “Best Public Relations/Publicity Program” for its Main Street Electrical Parade success.

Knott’s Berry Farm won “Best Radio Advertisement” for a spot plugging its annual scarefest, the Halloween Haunt.

And Anaheim fast-food smagnate Carl Karcher, whose messy burgers have left an indelible impression on many a visitor, was inducted into the California Tourism Hall of Fame.
