Long Beach State Track Teams Finish Second

Karl Stephens won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.84 seconds as the Long Beach State men’s track team placed second at the Collegiate Track and Field Classic at Long Beach State. Teammate Lewis Young was second in the 200 (21.66) for the 49ers (147 points), who finished second to Weber State (187).

Long Beach’s Kashus Perona won the 400 with a time of 47.99. Jason Hinkin won the pole vault (17 feet 6 3/4 inches) and Detric Cofield won the long jump (23-5 1/2) for the 49ers.

UC Irvine’s Robert Frichtel finished third in the 1,500 (3:53.73). The Anteaters (84) finished sixth in the meet and Cal State Fullerton (74) was eighth.

Phil Sitner finished fourth in the 800 (1:55.0) for the Titans.

In the women’s meet:

Asa Karlsson won the 400 hurdles as the Long Beach State women (145 points) also finished second behind Weber State (149). Karlsson finished second in the 100 hurdles, .07 seconds behind winner Skye Greene of UC Irvine.

UC Irvine finished fourth with 133 points.

Sarah McDougall won the 3,000 (10:00.16) for Cal State Fullerton. The Titans finished seventh. UC Irvine’s JoJo Yaba was second (10:01.01).

Popi Edwards ran in 12.27 and finished second in the 100 for the Anteaters.

In Big West Conference baseball:

Cal State Fullerton 16, Cal Poly SLO 5--Ryan Fullerton was two for three with two home runs, two walks, four runs batted in, and three runs scored for Cal State Fullerton (15-11).

The Titans’ Brian Tokarse (5-0) pitched six innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on six hits and five walks. He struck out five.

Long Beach State 11, UC Santa Barbara 2--J.J. Newkirk and Steve Doherty each had four hits and a run scored as Long Beach State defeated UC Santa Barbara. Izzy Gonzalez had a home run, a double and three RBIs for the 49ers (12-11, 4-1).

Pitcher Marcus Jones (3-3) pitched a five-hitter and walked three.

Doherty, Newkirk and Casey Martin each doubled twice for Long Beach.

Joe Kemper had two hits for UC Santa Barbara (11-13, 1-4).

In nonconference baseball:

Dartmouth 6, Chapman 4--Michael Conway’s two-out single ignited a four-run rally in the eighth inning to lift Dartmouth (2-0) over Chapman (7-8).

Eric Walania pitched a complete game for Dartmouth, retiring the last seven batters.

In the Big West Conference softball:

Pacific 5, Cal State Fullerton 0--Leslie Rodgers (6-2) pitched a three-hit shutout, striking out six for Pacific (16-7) in the second game of a doubleheader.

In the first game, Brandes McArthur pitched a complete game, giving up three runs (one unearned) on eight hits and two walks. She struck out five for Pacific, which defeated Cal State Fullerton, 9-3.

Dara Marzolo went two for three with an RBI and a run scored for the Titans (7-11).

In nonconference women’s softball:

Pacific Christian 1, Claremont 0--Shortstop Leslie Williams’ RBI double in the third inning was the difference as Pacific Christian improved to 5-11 this season.

In the NCAA Diving Championships:

Earley finishes eighth--UC Irvine sophomore Arika Earley finished eighth in the one-meter competition of the NCAA Diving Championship at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Earley, a graduate of Mission Viejo, scored 360.45 points.

USC’s Dorte Lindner won the one-meter competition with 413.55 points.

Capistrano Valley graduate Cassie Day (UC Santa Barbara) finished 25th with 325.65 points.

In the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

Long Beach State 3, UC Irvine 1--Ed Ratledge had 28 kills as Long Beach State defeated UC Irvine, 12-15, 15-2, 15-12, 15-9. Chris Seiffert had 65 assists for the 49ers (14-5, 9-5).

Chris Harger had 33 kills for UC Irvine (5-11, 3-9). Kevin Dake had 57 assists for the Anteaters.
