No. 4 Mater Dei Splits Doubleheader With Irvine

Mater Dei, the fourth-ranked baseball team in Orange County, won a blowout and Irvine won a close game as the teams split a nonleague doubleheader at Windrow Park in Irvine.

Tony Micheletti had two hits, including a home run, and Brett Kay had three hits to lead Mater Dei (4-2) to a 12-1 victory the first game.

In the second game, Ryan Brucker was two for two with four stolen bases and scored the game’s only run for host Irvine (4-3).

In other nonleague games:

Pacifica 6-4, Orange 1-6--Brett Sewell drove in two runs in the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie in the second game for host Orange at Hart Park. James Starr pitched six innings for the victory and also had two doubles and scored a run in the second game for Orange.

Los Amigos 6, Estancia 1--Robert Chavez had three hits and Greg Madrid had two hits to lead Los Amigos (3-2).

Bolsa Grande 7, Whittier 3--Joey Francisco had two singles and drove in two runs for visiting Bolsa Grande (6-1). Adam Corona had a double and drove in a run, Sam Bader had two singles and drove in a run and Issac Gonzalez had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run for Bolsa Grande.

Tustin 11, Calvary Chapel 1--Quinn Brumbaugh had three hits and Chris Gary had a home run and was the winning pitcher for Tustin (4-1).

Canyon 3-14, Esperanza 1-1--Jeremy Martin had a grand slam and a double the second game for Canyon (5-1). In the first game, Jeff Leunberger pitched three innings to get the victory.

Magnolia 21, Santiago 2--Joey Camarillo had four hits and four RBIs, and Justin Reding had four hits and two RBIs as Magnolia raced to an 8-0 lead and breezed to its third victory. Left-hander Greg Young went five innings for the victory. The Sentinals have 37 runs and 46 hits in their last two games.

Montclair 3, Fullerton 2--Montclair scored the winning run in the bottom seventh on error by Fullerton’s third baseman. Josh Leech had two hits and four pitchers held Montclair to five hits and no earned runs in the loss for Fullerton (3-4).

In nonleague golf:

Cypress 184, Los Amigos 252--Chris Harms and William Hulse each shot a one-under-par 35 at Mile Square, as Cypress seta school record. The previous record of 191 was set last week against Los Amigos at Cypress Golf Club.

Fountain Valley 391, Brea Olinda 393--Jeff Greenfield shot one-under 71 for host Fountain Valley in a match that started Friday at Imperial and ended Monday at Mile Square.

In the Valencia girls’ golf tournament:

Woodbridge finishes second--Woodbridge shot two-under par 27, finishing second behind Palm Desert’s 25 at Brea Golf Course. Mater Dei’s Anna Story won the longest drive competition at 245 yards. Channing Lovejoy of Woodbridge won the closest to the pin competition with a shot that finished 1 foot 7 inches from the pin.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Santa Margarita 12, Aliso Niguel 6--Andrew Tsu swept, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1, as seventh-ranked Santa Margarita (6-0) beat sixth-ranked Wolverines (4-2). Garrick Gaffney and Andy Larson swept in doubles for the Eagles, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4.

Newport Harbor 13, Trabuco Hills 5--John Rinek and Mike Hovel each swept their singles sets without losing a game to lead Newport Harbor (3-2). Scott Sims also swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for the Sailors.

In the Sonora boys’ swimming invitational:

Servite 306, Downey 229, Esperanza 177--Jarrod Cruzat won the 100-yard individual medley in 2:03.23 and the 100 backstroke (55.01) to lead Servite. The Friars also won the 200 medley relay (1:45.66) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.34).

In the Sonora girls’ swimming invitational:

Rosary 374, Esperanza 355, Cypress 157--Noel Delgrasse won the 100 freestyle in 58.41 to lead Rosary. The Royals also took first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:49.48) and the 400 freestyle relay (4:05.86). Esperanza’s Teresa Guidi won the 100 backstroke (1:02.38) and the 100 breaststroke (1:11.32).

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

Irvine 3, Tustin 1--Clay Carlson had 26 kills and Jeff Richter had 22 kills as Irvine (2-2) defeated Tustin, 15-6, 15-13, 13-15, 15-7. Aaron Sizer had 18 kills and Kevin Kowalski had 15 kills for Tustin (2-1).
