With Ewing Out, Jackson Rallies Nets Past New York

Jim Jackson scored 20 of his season-high 29 points after Patrick Ewing left because of an injury in the third quarter, and the New Jersey Nets rallied from an 11-point deficit to beat the New York Knicks, 92-86, Friday night at East Rutherford, N.J.

It was the Nets’ second victory over the Knicks in 12 days.

New York was in control until early in the third quarter when Ewing pulled the triceps muscle in his left arm after apparently catching it in the shirt of Net center Eric Montross with 10:58 left and New York ahead, 54-45. Ewing finished with 18 points.

The Knicks managed to stay in front for six more minutes, but it was all Jackson and New Jersey after that. Jackson scored 11 points during the rest of the quarter to spark a 20-4 spurt that put the Nets ahead, 72-67, after three quarters.

Miami 83, Cleveland 79--After leading by 29 points in the first half, the Heat needed a free throw by P.J. Brown with 1.9 seconds remaining to pull out the victory at Miami.

After successive baskets by Alonzo Mourning gave Miami an 81-71 lead with 4:34 to play, Cleveland scored eight of the next nine points to make it 82-79 with 21.9 seconds remaining.

Mourning finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Utah 101, Milwaukee 96--Karl Malone had 31 points for the Jazz, which scored its final 11 points from the foul line at Salt Lake City.

Jeff Hornacek made six of Utah’s final 11 free throws and finished with 25 points.

Sherman Douglas, who led Milwaukee with 26 points, pulled the Bucks to 83-81 with 6:50 to go. But Malone took over for the Jazz, scoring seven consecutive points.

Portland 115, Vancouver 81--Clifford Robinson made six consecutive three-point shots in the second quarter and finished with 26 points for the Trail Blazers at Portland.

Robinson’s six three-pointers in a quarter were one short of the NBA record, by Denver’s John Roche in 1982 and Atlanta’s Steve Smith earlier this month.

Robinson scored 22 points in the second quarter. He missed his other two three-point shots in the third quarter.

Indiana 116, Charlotte 115--Fred Hoiberg made a three-point shot with 1.6 seconds remaining and Reggie Miller scored 39 points for the Pacers at Charlotte.

Miller attempted 10 three-pointers and tied his own club record by making eight.

Indiana shot a season-high 61% in rallying from 10 down with 9:44 left.

Washington 113, Toronto 86--Chris Webber made his first seven shots and had 24 points and 10 rebounds as the Bullets improved their playoff hopes with their most lopsided victory of the season, at Landover, Md.

Washington opened the game with a 17-2 run and won for the seventh time in eight games.

Juwan Howard added 22 points for the Bullets (35-35), who reached .500 for the first time since Jan. 31, when they were 22-22.

Phoenix 122, Golden State 115--Rex Chapman scored seven of his 18 points in overtime at Phoenix as the Suns moved into seventh place in the Western Conference.

Kevin Johnson had a season-high 38 points and 13 assists and Wesley Person made seven of Phoenix’s 10 three-point goals.

Golden State’s Latrell Sprewell had his first triple-double--29 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.

Philadelphia 113, Boston 105--The 76ers, who have won only 19 games this season, improved to 3-0 against the Celtics in the game at Philadelphia.

Jerry Stackhouse, who finished with 25 points, was one of seven Philadelphia players scoring in double figures.

The 76ers broke it open in the second quarter, outscoring Boston, 37-19.

The Celtics fell to 0-21 against Atlantic Division foes.

Seattle 92, Minnesota 81--Gary Payton and Hersey Hawkins each scored 20 points at Seattle as the SuperSonics beat the Timberwolves for the 25th consecutive time.

Payton, who also had 10 assists, drilled a jump shot as the shot clock expired with 1:37 left to give the SuperSonics an 89-79 lead.
