Dons Roll on Wood’s No-Hitter
Kim Wood pitched a no-hitter and Jodi Kent went four for four with two solo home runs to lead Verdugo Hills High to a 23-1 rout of Lincoln on Tuesday in a Northern Conference softball opener at Verdugo Hills.
Wood (7-1), a junior right-hander, struck out 19, walked six and did not allow an earned run.
The Dons (7-1) scored 14 runs in the first inning on seven hits and six walks.
Chatsworth 4, Granada Hills 2--Trisha Hegeman and Charleen Rubin each hit run-scoring singles and the Chancellors (5-1) scored another run on an error in a three-run sixth inning in a Northwest Valley Conference opener at Chatsworth.
Cleveland 18, Birmingham 7--Morgan Bleimeyer and Sonya Torres each had two hits and Monique Abourched had four stolen bases for the Cavaliers (3-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference opener at Birmingham (1-5).
Taft 7, San Fernando 1--Danielle Cabello had two hits and three RBIs, including a two-run double in a four-run third inning, for the Toreadors (4-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference opener at Taft.
Kyle Brown also drove in three runs.
Calabasas 2, Santa Clara 1--Ami Rossen (2-4) pitched a two-hitter and struck out seven, and Sara Hall drove in both runs for the Coyotes ((3-7, 2-2 in league play) in a Frontier League game at Santa Clara.
Camarillo 9, Channel Islands 0--Jill Borchard had three hits to lead a 15-hit attack for the Scorpions (4-5, 2-1) in a Marmonte League game at Channel Islands.
Freshman Kathrine Nevard (2-2) pitched a two-hitter, striking out 14 and walking none.
Rio Mesa 9, Buena 2--Jessica Brown had three hits and scored three runs, and Rhianna Rogers had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs for the Spartans (7-1, 3-1) in a Channel League game at Buena.
Quartz Hill 4, Ridgecrest Burroughs 1--Jodie Cox (7-4) scattered four hits, striking out seven and walking one, for the Rebels (8-5) in a nonleague game at Quartz Hill.
Cox hit a two-run home run, her fourth of the season, in the second inning and Sara Moore hit a run-scoring double in the first inning.
Simi Valley 5, Carson 1--Pitcher Brittney Green hit a three-run triple in a five-run fifth inning for the Pioneers (7-2) in the second round of the Righetti tournament in Santa Maria.
Green (3-0) threw a four-hitter, striking out seven and walking two, and did not allow an earned run.
Lori Tande had three hits for Simi Valley.
Cajon 5, Ventura 3--Camille Menkil was two for three for Ventura (1-10) in the second round of the Righetti tournament.
Cajon scored one run in each of the first three innings and two in the fifth.
Ventura lost a first-round game to Fresno Bullard, 5-1.
Montclair Prep 22, Carpinteria 1--Tami Freedman tripled, doubled, had five runs batted in and scored five runs for the Mounties (5-4) in a consolation game of the Atascadero tournament.
