Huntington Beach’s Moser Impressive

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Huntington Beach senior Scott Moser, still trying to break the Orange County and state high school records in the discus, will have to wait a bit longer.

Moser, while not breaking the record set in 1985 by Capistrano Valley’s Brian Blutreich, still won impressively over the state’s top competition Saturday at the Trabuco Hills Invitational.

Moser, the defending state champion, had four throws exceed 195 feet, edging state runner-up John Bello of Rancho Cucamonga by more than 10 feet, with his effort of 198 feet 9 inches. Bello’s best of 186-7 was good for second place.

“It was a good competition,” Huntington Beach assistant coach Tony Ciarelli said. “He’s got a pretty good attitude about it. All [Moser] wants is just to come in and throw further than he has rather than go for records.”

Moser was disappointed that he couldn’t capitalize on the weather conditions. “The wind was good,” said Moser, who wants to break Blutreich’s mark of 210-8, “but I was throwing too low to get much help.”

In the shotput, Moser’s throw of 56- 3/4 put him in fourth place.

The wind might have affected Moser, but it didn’t hurt Tustin standout Dominique DeGrammont, who won the 110 high hurdles (13.92) and 300 intermediate hurdles (37.50).

DeGrammont, a senior, also ran the second leg on the Tillers’ winning 4 x 200-meter relay team (1:29.26).

Mission Viejo junior Ashley Bethel won three events, taking top honors in the high jump (5-4), long jump (17-3 1/4) and 100 low hurdles (14.77).

El Toro senior Elliott Parks won the high jump (6-6) and long jump (22-5 1/2) and University junior Martin Brix posted the county’s fastest time this spring in the 1,600 with his time of 4:24.72.

Santa Margarita sophomore Amanda Shanklin won the triple jump (36-6) and was the long jump runner-up with a personal best of 16-11.
