Long Beach Completes 3-Game Sweep of Pacific

Long Beach State completed a three-game sweep of host Pacific with a 10-3 victory in a Big West Conference baseball game Sunday.

Long Beach hit .407 in the series and outscored Pacific, 31-8, in the three games. Long Beach (23-13, 14-1) has won 13 consecutive conference games, one short of the college’s record.

The 49ers can tie the mark Friday when they start a three-game series at Cal State Fullerton. Long Beach leads second-place Fullerton by four games in the Southern Division.

Fullerton lost to Sacramento State, 10-9, in 12 innings Sunday.

Toby Sanchez, a junior from Rancho Santiago College, had two hits, including his sixth home run, and drove in four runs Sunday for Long Beach.

He hit a three-run home run in the fifth that gave Long Beach a 10-1 lead.

Paul Day, a junior from Saddleback College, also had a two hits, including his second home run, and drove in two.

Izzy Gonzalez, a senior from Cypress College, had four hits, including a double, and Keith Cowley, a senior from Rancho Santiago, added three hits and scored two runs.

In the three-game series, Gonzalez was nine for 14, Day was eight for 15, Cowley was seven for 11, and Sanchez was six for 13.

In another Big West Conference game:

Cal State Sacramento 10, Cal State Fullerton 9 (12 innings)--Bill Hoover singled in the winning run with one out in the 12th for host Cal State Sacramento (12-25, 4-11).

Hoover’s single drove in Harry Hargrove, who doubled. Mike Greenlee had seven strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings but took the loss for Fullerton (22-15, 10-5). The game lasted 4 hours 21 minutes.

Hargrove had four hits, including his 17th home run. He drove in three runs as did Joel Walker, who also homered for Sacramento.

Sacramento led, 7-2, after four innings, but Fullerton scored three in the fifth and two in the sixth to tie it. Each team scored twice in the eighth.

Pete Fukuhara had a home run, a double and a single and drove in three runs for Fullerton. C.J. Ankrum had a home run and drove in two runs and Steve Chatham drove in two runs for Fullerton.

Sacramento had 16 hits and left 14 runners on base. Fullerton got 15 hits and left nine.
