Fallon’s Home Run in Eighth Sparks Chapman

Josh Fallon hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Chapman a 4-2 victory over The Master’s College in a nonconference baseball game Saturday at Hart Park.

Chapman (19-10) had 14 hits with Dusty Martin leading the way with a three-for-five performance. Fallon, Cale Shepherd, Rob O’Brien and Mike Thornton each collected two hits.

Mark Mazon pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on three hits, three walks and six strikeouts for Chapman. Jason Besson (2-0) pitched one inning of relief for the win and Shepherd collected his first save for the Panthers.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 6-2, Concordia 0-5--Joe Rivera was two for three with a stolen base and a run for Concordia (16-21, 4-14) in the second game of the doubleheader.

Terrik Clark had a two-run double in the second inning for Southern California College (27-11, 12-7).

In the first game, Bryce Primm (5-3) pitched a six-hit shutout with seven strikeouts for Southern California College.

In Big West Conference softball:

Long Beach State 7-5, Pacific 8-2--Tiffany Blood drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning for Long Beach State (32-15-1).

In the first game of the doubleheader, Pacific (27-16) scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to win.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Southern California College 8-0, Point Loma Nazarene 0-2--Jen Houston pitched an eight-hit shutout as Southern California College (14-28, 4-6) won the first game to split a doubleheader. Freshman Rachel Carver went three for four with one RBI for the Vanguards.

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 6-3, UC San Diego 2-2--Stephanie Carew hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to seal the win for Chapman (31-6). The home run was the 12th of the season for Carew, who leads the nation in Division III.

Pitcher Jessamine Maiben struck out seven in winning her 11th of the year.

In the first game, freshman Brittany Carlson won her 13th in a row and had a two-run single in the first inning for Chapman. Maiben had three hits in the game.

In nonconference track:

Yaba finishes first--UC Irvine’s Jo-Jo Yaba won the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:37.88 in a nonconference meet against UCLA, Houston and CS Northridge. Teammate Skye Green finished third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 59.68.

UC Irvine finished in fourth place in the men’s and women’s meets. UCLA won the meet.
