Extradition of Kidnapping Suspect Unlikely, Officials Say

Share

A kidnapping suspect who led police on a chase from Compton to the Mexican border Saturday night is unlikely to face prosecution for the crime in the United States, Compton officials said Tuesday.

Mexican authorities captured Vaucilio Manzano, 32, after he raced across the San Ysidro border checkpoint and crashed into a Mexican police car. But Manzano, who was in the United States illegally, has been released by Mexican authorities and may only face minor charges there for hitting the car, Compton police Capt. Steven M. Roller said.

Manzano allegedly kidnapped his 6-year-old daughter from the home of his estranged wife, then threatened to shoot the child. When police approached Manzano’s truck near a fast food restaurant where he had planned to meet his wife, Manzano sped away, leading police and the California Highway Patrol on a 2 1/2 hour pursuit.

Compton police expect to seek a warrant for Manzano’s arrest in case he returns to this country. But chances of having him extradited to face prosecution are slim, police officials said.
