Fatal Shooting of Pit Bull Investigated
The fatal shooting of a loose pit bull terrier that had attacked an Oxnard man’s German shepherd while it was tied up in the front yard is being investigated by Oxnard police.
Authorities said Monday that Edward Saldana, 48, and his son, Edward Saldana Jr., 25, followed the pit bull by car from their home near the corner of G Street and Robert Avenue after the Sunday afternoon attack and saw the dog go into the side yard of a home in the 800 block of North G Street.
As the dog barked and ran up and down a fence line, Saldana Jr. fired several handgun rounds at the dog and killed it, police allege.
The pit bull was being cared for by a 17-year-old boy while the dog’s owner was away. It was unclear how the dog got loose. By Monday afternoon, police had yet to locate the teenager or the pit bull’s owner.
The German shepherd suffered minor injuries in the attack, police said.
Oxnard police did not cite or arrest Saldana Jr. but will forward the case to the district attorney’s office for review and possible prosecution.
