Parmenter Swims to Fifth

L.A. Baptist High sophomore Jennifer Parmenter finished fifth in the 400-meter individual medley at the World Short Course swimming championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, on Thursday.

Parmenter timed 4:39.97 and was the top U.S. finisher in the event. Emma Johnson of Australia won in 4:35.18.

Millar time: Brigham Young middle blocker Ryan Millar, a former Highland High standout, was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball player of the year.

The 6-foot-7 sophomore helped the fourth-ranked Cougars (18-5, 14-5 in MPSF play) to a second-place finish in the Mountain Division.

Millar won the award over 1996 Olympian Mike Lambert of Stanford and two-time All-American Paul Nihipali of UCLA, both first-team selections.

George Roumain of Pepperdine was a first-team selection and teammate Kevin Barnett was a second-team pick. Chad Strickland of Cal State Northridge was named to the third team.

UC Santa Barbara’s Donny Harris (La Canada High) and UCLA’s Tom Stillwell (Notre Dame High) were first-team selections. Hawaii outside hitter Jason Ring (Pierce College) was a second-team pick and Hawaii setter Curt Vaughan (Ventura High) was honorable mention.

Headed north: Calabasas guard Ryan Coleman has signed a letter of intent with Cal State Sacramento.

Coleman averaged over 23 points and nine assists a game for the Coyotes and was named co-player of the year in the Frontier League.
