Around the leagues

Shortstop Dan Cey (El Camino Real High) looks at the numbers he has posted in the first two weeks of the minor league season with relief, rather than excitement.

Leading off for class-A Fort Myers, Fla., Cey was hitting .446 (25 for 56) through Wednesday night, second in the Florida State League.

“Getting off to a good start is something that I always shoot for,” Cey said. “You don’t want to dig a hole and then you’re always trying to fight back to where you should be. Now I can relax because I’m ahead of where I want to be. It’s not like I’m going to be on cruise control, but it takes the pressure off.”

Although hitting doesn’t seem to be a problem for Cey, the Minnesota Twins’ 1996 third-round pick out of California is adjusting to playing on wet fields on rainy Florida nights. Growing up in the Valley, he rarely had to throw wet baseballs.

“That’s another part of the game I really need to learn right now,” he said. “If you use a lot of your arm and let the thing go, the ball’s just going to take off on you. That happened to me twice [Wednesday] night.”
