Rancho Alamitos’ Leo Kosi, The Times Orange County back of the year, will be joined by some of the most prolific prep wide receivers from this past football season on the North team for the 38th All-Star football game July 11 at Orange Coast College.

Servite’s Steve Ward, a Times all-county first-team selection, and second-team picks Mike Crawford (Orange Lutheran) and Jesus Acevedo (Anaheim) are among the 36 players who will be coached by Loara’s John de Fries.

Three Orange Lutheran football players have signed with colleges, Lancer Coach Jim Kunau announced. Danny Monarch, an All-Olympic League cornerback, will attend St. Mary’s. Cornerback Travis Freeman, the Southern Section Division X defensive player of the year, will attend Cal Lutheran, as will quarterback Nick Odenath.

Second baseman Salina Vavia of Aliso Niguel has signed to play softball at Nova University in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Wolverine softball Coach Kari Tubbs said. Vavia is the first softball player in the four-year history of the school to sign a letter of intent.

Mater Dei’s No. 1 golfer, Bret Parker, has signed to compete for the University of Hawaii, the Monarchs announced Wednesday.

Canyon softball players Becky Tippets, Ro Lutz and Veronica Lopez will compete against El Dorado’s Tiffany Smith, Jill Jessen and Samantha Kimura in the Home Runs for Heroes contest Saturday at Anaheim Stadium before the Angels play Detroit.

Each player gets 15 swings, and the 10 best swings will count toward the final score. Players receive six points for a 200-foot home run, three for a 175-footer, and one for a 160-foot drive in the air.

The contest was part of Canyon’s recent tribute to Michelle Carew; proceeds from the entry fee and sponsor donations benefit the Marrow Tissue Donor Research. More than $11,000 has been collected so far.
