Barrera Leads Riverside Past Fullerton in Softball

Tischa Barrera’s RBI single in the third inning proved to be the only run Riverside pitcher Mandy Dorow needed as the Tigers defeated Fullerton, 1-0, in an Orange Empire Conference game Friday at Riverside.

The loss dropped Fullerton (33-11, 18-2) into a tie with Cypress for first place in the Orange Empire Conference. The Hornets visit Orange Coast on Monday in the regular-season finale.

Michele Wilson reached base on an error in the third inning. Wilson then took stole second and took third on a passed ball. With two outs, Wilson scored on Barrera’s single.

Dorow gave up nine hits and picked up her 24th victory for the Tigers (24-14, 10-10).

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Rancho Santiago 3, Golden West 2--Melissa Cruz singled in two runs in the third capping a three-run inning for Rancho Santiago (28-18, 14-6).

In the Orange Empire Conference men’s swimming championships:

Orange Coast in first place--Orange Coast won four of six events to take 39-point lead over runner-up Saddleback after the second day of three. Wisnu Wardhana won the 100 butterfly (49.81) and swam the third leg of the 200 medley relay and anchored the 800 freestyle relay, both of which won, for Orange Coast.

In the South Coast Conference men’s swimming and diving championships:

Golden West leads after two days--Golden West leads with 672, 228 points in front of runner-up El Camino. Felix Sutanto won the 400 individual medley (4:02.46), breaking the old conference record, 4:06.12, set in 1994.

In the Orange Empire Conference women’s swimming championships:

Orange Coast leads the pack--Chintya Ganda won the 50 butterfly (26.44) and the 50 backstroke (27.70) for Orange Coast.

In the South Coast Conference women’s swimming and diving championships:

Golden West leads--Former Marina High swimmer Emily Hagen won the 50 butterfly in 28.40 and teammate Susan Lehman won the 50 backstroke (30.35 seconds) to lead Golden West.

In the Ojai women’s tennis invitational:

Cami advances--Cami Erickson of Orange Coast advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-1 fourth-round victory over Tiffinie Safford of San Diego Mesa. The doubles team of Erickson and Whitney Gilliam also advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Mandy Hoag and Safford.
