Wardhana Leads Pirates to Conference Swim Title

Orange Coast’s Wisnu Wardhana set a school record with a time of 46.01 to win the men’s 100 freestyle as the Orange Coast men’s team won the Orange Empire Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday with 711 points.
For the Pirates, it was their first men’s title in three years.
Saddleback finished second with 687 points.
Hilary Cox won the 100 backstroke (1:03.25) as Orange Coast (682 points) also won the women’s championship. Cox also was a member of the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
Palomar (563) finished second and Saddleback finished third with 439 points.
In the South Coast men’s swimming championships:
Golden West wins--Golden West outscored runner-up El Camino, 935-589, to take the conference title. Felix Sutanto won the 200 backstroke (1:49.89), breaking the old record of 1:55.32 set in 1985. Albert Sutanto won the 200 butterfly (1:49.75), breaking the old mark of 1:52.32 set in 1986.
In the South Coast women’s swimming championships:
Golden west wins, sets a record--Golden West scored 728 to take the conference crown with El Camino a distant second at 444. Golden West won the 200 freestyle relay (1:41.35), breaking the old record of 1:41.47 set in 1984. Rorie Rangel of Fullerton won the 100 backstroke (1:00.76), breaking the old record of 1:01.99 set in 1986. Rangel also won the 100 breaststroke (1:10.60).
At the Orange Empire Track and Field Championships:
Kim Watts shines for Golden West--Kim Watts scored 51 of Golden West’s 159.49 points as the Rustlers finished second behind San Diego Mesa (175.2).
Donna Harris of Orange Coast won the 1,500 (5:00.85), 3,000 (10:46.25) and the 5,000 (19:11.30). The Pirates finished third with 128.7 points.
In the men’s championships, Ivan Orloff won the 110 hurdles (54.84) and the 400 hurdles for second place Rancho Santiago (136). Riverside finished first with 179 points and Saddleback (132) finished third.
In the Ojai Valley tennis invitational:
Cami Erickson of Orange Coast advances--Cami Erickson defeated top-seeded Kyoko Maebara of Grossmont in singles, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6.
In Orange Empire Conference baseball:
Rancho Santiago 9, Orange Coast 6--Rancho Santiago clinched the conference title with the victory and second-place Saddleback’s 6-5 loss to host Riverside.
It is the sixth conference title in the last eight seasons for Rancho Santiago, which has also won three of the last four state titles.
Cypress 8, Fullerton 7--Brian Flanagan’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Cypress (31-9, 14-7) a one-run lead and the Chargers held on to defeat Fullerton.
