Edgar Renteria hit a tiebreaking double in a three-run eighth inning and the Florida Marlins defeated the San Diego Padres, 9-7, Saturday at San Diego.

Renteria, who extended his hitting streak to nine games, drove reliever Doug Bochtler’s pitch into left-center field to score Jeff Conine for a 7-6 lead. Conine had walked to start the inning.

Moises Alou’s single drove in Renteria to put the Marlins ahead 8-6, and Bobby Bonilla followed with an RBI single off Joey Long for the final run of the inning.

Bochtler (0-2), who had not given up a run in 9 2/3 innings in his last eight appearances, gave up three runs on three hits.

Jay Powell (1-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win. Powell entered in the seventh inning with two outs and a runner on second. He struck out Archi Cianfrocco for the final out.

Rob Nen gave up an RBI single to Tony Gwynn with one out in the ninth, but got the last two outs for his 12th save.

The win was the Marlins’ ninth in 11 games, and ended San Diego’s season-high five-game winning streak.

Florida had 17 hits, including three apiece for Alou, Bonilla, Jim Eisenreich and Gregg Zaun. All four players drove in two runs apiece.

San Diego tied the score, 6-6, in the seventh on Wally Joyner’s RBI double off Dennis Cook.

Cook, who relieved starter Pat Rapp with one out and one on base in the inning, retired Gwynn on a fly ball for the second out before Joyner’s hit.

Eisenreich had given the Marlins the lead at 6-5 when he singled home Renteria in the fourth. Renteria opened the inning with a walk and was balked to second.

After San Diego took a 5-0 lead in the first, Florida rallied to tie it on Zaun’s RBI double in the second and a four-run rally in the third.
