The Yorba Linda Civic Center’s services may be what draw people, but its looks attract all its praise.
The center, which is along the west side of Casa Loma Avenue between Imperial Highway and Yorba Linda Boulevard, has won kudos from UC Irvine and the American Institute of Architects for integrating civic services, a community center, schools and open spaces into “an aesthetically appealing, cohesive whole.”
Jane Austin, a Placentia resident who works at the community center, said she’s not surprised to hear such adulation.
“This place is gorgeous,” she said. “We’re really proud of it. People come from as far as Westminster and Hacienda Heights just to see it because it’s so beautiful.”
A southbound drive along Casa Loma, beginning at Imperial Highway, reveals a community center with a horse trail around its perimeter, Hurless Barton Park, the recently opened Casa Loma Field House, Yorba Linda Middle School, City Hall and the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District headquarters.
Maple, jacaranda and eucalyptus trees line the half-mile stretch, where people go for everything from City Council and school board meetings to indoor basketball games, wedding receptions and senior citizen activities.
The judges who included it on this year’s list of Orange County’s best public places wrote: “The Civic Center complex is a multiuse center of activities serving the social needs of the city.”
