Pitcher Rob Luce, second baseman Chris Dean and third baseman Carlos Villalobos have been selected by managers to the California League all-star team that will face the Carolina League all-stars June 17 in Durham, N.C.

Luce, who went into the JetHawk rotation only because of an injury to Jeff Farsnworth, has become the staff’s most dependable starter. A 22-year-old right-hander drafted in the ninth round last year out of Nevada Las Vegas, Luce is 7-1 with a 3.06 earned-run average.

Dean, a fourth-year pro in his third season in the Cal League, is a prime candidate for a promotion after the all-star break. Dean, 23, is hitting .350 with six homers and 26 runs batted in.

Villalobos, also in his second season with the JetHawks, was always thought to have a good bat, but he had struggled in the field. Villalobos, 22, has blossomed at the plate, hitting .336 with five homers and 33 RBIs. He has even played better at third base, although he has been spending time at designated hitter and in the outfield.

Rancho Cucamonga outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. (Granada Hills High, Mission College) also was selected to the Cal League all-star team. He is batting .311 with seven home runs and 33 RBIs.
