Cypress Hires Mission Viejo Assistant to Coach Football

Kerry Crabb has been hired as the Cypress football coach, athletic director Rob Walker said Thursday.

Crabb, 39, spent the last three seasons as offensive coordinator at Mission Viejo. Before that he was the coach of West Torrance High.

“I wanted to get back into head coaching,” Crabb said. “I enjoyed being a coordinator. But you develop certain aspects and philosophies as a coach, and it can be tough going back as assistant even though they gave me lots of room at Mission Viejo.”

Walker also announced the hiring of Frank Califano as boys’ basketball coach. Califano spent the past six seasons at West Torrance. Last season West Torrance was 18-8 and and reached the second round of the Division II-AA playoffs, losing to Villa Park.

Mike Giles said Thursday he has resigned as the Canyon boys’ swimming and water polo coach.

Last season the boys’ swim team finished second in the Century League. The water polo team was 18-9 and finished third, going to the playoffs for the third straight season. Canyon lost to eventual Division I champion Long Beach Wilson in the first round.

Ed Howard, baseball coach at Orange High, has resigned to become an assistant baseball coach at Fullerton College, said Dave Zirkle, Orange boys’ athletic director.

Howard was 114-103 in nine years at Orange.

Also resigning at Orange High was boys’ volleyball Coach Chip Monaco, who will attend Chapman University this fall to earn his teaching credentials. Zirkle also said Johnny Johnson, who was an assistant to Chapman basketball Coach Mike Bokosky, has been hired to replace Richard Bossenmeyer as boys’ basketball coach.

Chris Majors, Trabuco Hills basketball player, has agreed to attend Chapman this fall, Coach Rainer Wulf said. Majors, a two-year starter, led the Mustangs in scoring (17.6) and rebounding (5.1) for the 1996-97 season.

Jon Carlew, the Costa Mesa boys’ volleyball coach the past two seasons, has resigned to complete his education at Long Beach State, athletic director Jerry Howell said. Carlew, a Costa Mesa graduate, was 7-19 the past two seasons.

Edgar Smith has been hired as girls’ soccer coach at Foothill High, Jerry Whitaker, girls’ athletic director, said.

This will be the first high school coaching assignment for Smith, 42, who has had a long involvement at the youth soccer level in Huntington Beach.

Elbert Davis, who was a standout for the Golden West College and Southern California College men’s basketball teams, has been hired as Corona del Mar girls’ basketball coach.

Davis replaces Zellie Dow, who resigned after one season in which the program went 3-19, 0-10 in league.

Davis was a point guard on the 1991 SCC basketball team, which won the NAIA District 3 title.

Selwyn Mansell of Estancia has made an oral commitment to attend the Air Force Academy.

Mansell, a 5-foot-9, 150-pound point guard, averaged 12.8 points, 6.1 assists and seven rebounds. He will attend the academy’s preparatory school next year.

He played one season at Estancia after transferring from Mater Dei.

Chapman baseball Coach Rex Peters was named the NCAA Division III West Region coach of the year by the American Baseball Coaches Assn. In his fourth season as head coach, Peters led the Panthers to a 31-16 record and a berth in the NCAA Division III championship tournament.

Matt Donoho, a pitcher at Capistrano Valley High, has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Concordia, Concordia Coach Jackie Schniepp announced. Donoho, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound left-hander, was 3-3 with four saves for the Cougars this past season. He also played first base and batted .316.

Tyler Siggins of Anaheim, a member of the U.S. junior national racquetball team, will compete at the 24th U.S. Junior Olympic championships, June 21-25 in Baltimore.

Joe Secoda, sophomore second baseman at Rancho Santiago, signed with the St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis scout Chuck Menzhuber said.

Secoda, who also attended Valencia High, batted .396 with eight homers and 36 RBIs for Rancho Santiago to earn a spot on the All-Southern California team. Menzhuber said Secoda, a seventh-round pick, was assigned Johnson City (Tenn.) in the Appalachian League.

Tickets for the second International Ice Hockey Federation In-Line Hockey World Championship are on sale at the Pond box office and at Ticketmaster.

The roller hockey event will be held at Disney ICE July 17-22, with semifinals and medal round games scheduled at the Pond, July 24 and 25. Teams representing Canada, Finland, Germany, Russia, Switzerland, Italy, Czech Republic, Austria, Australia, Japan, Netherlands and the defending champion United States are expected to participate.
