Royal Wins in a Walkover

With the help of four walks and a hit batter in the seventh inning, Royal rallied for two runs to beat Moorpark, 5-4, in a District 16 game at Royal High on Thursday.

Moorpark’s Rocky Frutos (0-2), who did not walk a batter in the first six innings, walked three consecutive batters in the seventh to load the bases with Moorpark (6-7-1) leading, 4-3.

Frutos was relieved by Paz Olsen-Pacheco, who hit Bobby Egan with a pitch to tie the game and walked Tony Ortega to force in the winning run.

Royal (9-1) has won eight consecutive games.

“[Frutos] was wild all game and we were harping on the kids to be disciplined,” Royal co-Coach Vince Vicari said. “Then finally in the seventh they stopped and concentrated.”

Royal’s Mike Byer (5-0) pitched a five-hitter, striking out 11 and walking four.

Frutos struck out six, walked three and hit two batters.

Moorpark’s Tim McLain had two hits, including a home run.

Conejo 10, Westlake 0--David Perry had three hits and drove in a run, and Ryan Donahue and Adam Leavitt each had two hits for Conejo in a District 16 game at Thousand Oaks High.

Billy Lockin singled to drive in Perry with the only run the Knights (8-8) would need in the second inning.

The game was called because of the 10-run rule after 4 2/3 innings.

Newbury Park 10, Ojai 2--Dan Greene went four for four with two RBIs, and Ryan Ayers had three hits and drove in one run for Newbury Park in a District 16 game at Ventura College.

Scott Vroman had two hits, including a run-scoring double in the fourth inning, for Newbury Park (7-6-1).

Woodland Hills East 8, Agoura Oaks 4--Alfredo Saenz hit a two-run double to break a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning for Woodland Hills East in a District 20 game at Oak Park High.

Saenz (1-0) pitched a five-hitter in his first start. He struck out five and walked two.

Travis Rutter had two hits, including a fifth-inning solo shot that was his fourth home run in three games for Woodland Hills East (13-4). He singled to drive in a run in Woodland Hills East’s six-run sixth inning.

Newhall Saugus 9, Studio City North 0--Left-hander Bobby Potruch (5-1) pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks for Newhall Saugus (12-5) in a District 20 game at Sylmar High.

Quartz Hill South 9, Lancaster 6--Ryan Davis hit two home runs and Darren Worley (1-2) allowed two earned runs in six innings while striking out four for Quartz Hill South (4-6-1) in a District 16 game at Quartz Hill High.

Encino 4, North Hollywood West 1--Mike Jackson (4-1) threw a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and one walk for Encino (9-4) in a District 20 game at Valley College.

Luke Worgan had two hits and two RBI, Tim Mathews had two hits and Max Flaum had two hits and drove in one run for Encino.

Mission Hills 14, Granada Hills West 4--Greg Koon went two for three, including a third-inning grand slam, for Mission Hills (5-7-2) in a District 20 game at Granada Hills High.

Camarillo B 8, Ventura 6--Mark Hensley singled, doubled and tripled for Camarillo B (7-9) in a District 16 game at Camarillo High.
