Nervous at Start, He’s One of Boys for Simi Valley

A bright, shining victory it wasn’t.

Yet Simi Valley High’s Ian Boys and Coach Dean Bradshaw both seemed glad to have the first game over after defeating North Hollywood, 76-50, in a first-round game of the Pioneers’ tournament Tuesday night.

Boys, a 6-foot-7 forward-center who was at the center of a controversial transfer from Buena, admitted he was nervous for his first game as a Pioneer.

“It felt good to finally play,” said Boys, who had 16 points and 12 rebounds. “I was a little more nervous than I usually am and that probably affected some of my shots.”

With 6-9 center Rafael Berumen held out by Bradshaw because he missed a practice, Simi Valley struggled offensively for three quarters before putting away North Hollywood in the fourth quarter.

The Pioneers, the No. 10-ranked team in the state in Cal-Hi Sports’ preseason poll, had 10 turnovers in the first half, but only two in the second.

“It’s obvious that when you’re playing without one of the best players in the state, if not the country, you’re going to miss him,” Bradshaw said. “We were out of sync. The guys are used to running plays with Rafael and he wasn’t in there.”

Simi Valley trailed, 13-10, at the end of the first quarter before leading, 30-26, at halftime and, 46-37, at the end of the third quarter.

The Pioneers, who play Hart in a second-round game at 8 tonight, opened the fourth quarter with an 18-4 run to take a 64-41 lead with 4:15 left. Boys scored four points during that stretch and 6-4 sophomore forward Brett Michel had four of his 20 to go with 14 rebounds.

Michel and Angelo Mosesso each had three three-point baskets for Simi Valley, and Bryan Zumo hit two in the fourth quarter.
