Wyatt Delivers for Chaminade

Mindy Wyatt of Chaminade High doesn’t mind waiting her turn.

A sophomore on a girls’ soccer team loaded with talent, Wyatt made the most of her relief duty Monday night, scoring the game’s lone goal in the first half after entering as a substitute in Chaminade’s 1-0 victory over Westlake at Chaminade.

Wyatt, who hasn’t started this season, replaced Jennifer Valentine at left midfielder midway through the first half. Ten minutes later, she stole the ball from a defender who was trying to clear the ball from the goalie box, turned and fired from the left corner.

“I didn’t do anything spectacular,” Wyatt said. “I did what I was supposed to do. I was where I was supposed to be.”

Chaminade (4-0), defending Southern Section Division III champion, had outscored opponents, 23-1, before facing Westlake. Although Wyatt scored four of those goals, she is comfortable coming off the bench.

“I’m patient,” she said. “It really doesn’t bug me. Everyone is fighting for a position.”

Westlake (1-1) appeared to take the lead 12 minutes into the game when Megan Daly scored in the left corner of the net from 10 yards. An offside call, however, nullified the goal.

“That was a goal as far as I’m concerned,” Westlake Coach Tahn Hyun said.

Westlake took eight shots on goal, Chaminade six.
