SEASON AT A GLANCE: One of the best athletes in the region, Hurns has excelled at fullback and safety for the Toreadors, who were undefeated in the regular season for the second consecutive year. Hurns has 746 yards rushing, 16 touchdowns and two interceptions.

WEEK AT A GLANCE: Hurns had a 47-yard touchdown run in the first quarter of Taft’s 8-6 City Section 4-A Division semifinal victory over Sylmar on Friday. He also caught a pass from K.C. Bounds for a two-point conversion, after a botched snap, for the deciding margin. Taft (12-0) plays San Pedro on Friday night at the Coliseum in a rematch of the 4-A final last season won by the Pirates.

Marissa Irvin

SCHOOL: Harvard-Westlake

SPORT: Tennis

YEAR: Senior

SEASON AT A GLANCE: The premier high school player in the region, Irvin didn’t lose a set while leading the Wolverines to the Mission League title and the Southern Section Division III finals, where Harvard-Westlake lost to Palm Desert. Irvin, who didn’t play high school tennis her first three years, signed a letter of intent with Stanford last month.

WEEK AT A GLANCE: Irvin defeated Morisa Yang of West Torrance, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1), to win the Southern Section girls’ singles title at the Racquet Club of Irvine on Friday. The top-seeded Irvin trailed, 4-0, in the second set before rallying. She defeated Maureen Diaz of Mayfield in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-3. In two earlier rounds, Irvin lost only three games in two matches.
