Bolsa Grande Comes Back to Edge Fullerton, 85-84

Bolsa Grande sophomore John James scored 40 points, including the winning basket with 22 seconds left, as the Matadors defeated Fullerton, 85-84, in a Fullerton boys’ basketball tournament pool-play game Wednesday at Fullerton.

The Matadors (5-1) trailed by nine points with six minutes left in the game, but James scored 13 points in the final quarter to rally his team.

After James’ final basket gave Bolsa Grande a one-point lead, Fullerton’s Michael Sailhamer missed two free throws with six seconds remaining. Marina also missed two free throws with 11 seconds left in its three-point loss to the Matadors Monday.

In the Foothill tournament:

Los Amigos 43, Saddleback 40--Jesse Carrillo made two free throws with 10 seconds left in the game to clinch the pool-play victory for Los Amigos (1-3). Carrillo scored 20 points. Teammate John Valenzuela added 15.

In the Ocean View boys’ basketball tournament:

Long Beach Jordan 69, No. 10 Mater Dei 66 (OT)--Craig Calloway scored 23 points, hitting five of seven three-pointers to lead Jordan (8-1) over No. 10 Mater Dei (3-2). The Monarchs led, 32-31, at the half but scored only nine third-quarter points to fall behind, 43-41, before tying the score, 60-60, at the end of regulation.

Darren Peterson added 20 points and seven rebounds for Jordan. Mater Dei was led by Steve Scoggin with 26 points and nine assists.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Capistrano Valley 61, Estancia 57--Mike Stowell scored 24 points to pace host Capistrano Valley (4-1). Sam Nelson had a game-high 25 points for Estancia (2-3).

In the Estancia girls’ basketball tournament:

Dana Hills 43, Estancia 31--Nicole Howard scored 13 points to lead Dana Hills (2-2) over the tournament hosts. Amy Deming scored a game-high 14 points to pace Estancia (0-3).

In the Falcon Classic:

Westminster 65, No. 7 El Toro 59--El Toro’s Giuliana Mendiola scored 24 of her 33 points in the first half, but the Chargers were outscored, 29-20, in the second half of the second-round game.

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

No. 1 Santa Ana 4, Loara 0--Danny Gonzalez had a goal and two assists to lead the Saints. Horatio Velasquez, Luis Diaz and Carlos Nava also scored goals for Santa Ana (3-0).

No. 6 Fountain Valley 3, Long Beach Poly 2--Bryan Futagaki scored on a penalty in the 60th minute and Fountain Valley (3-2) held on to its 3-2 lead. The kick was set up when Nick Tolman was tackled in the penalty box and the referee called a foul.

No. 9 Orange 4, Katella 0--Jose Lopez scored two of Orange’s four second-half goals. The Panthers improve to 4-1.

Ocean View 2, Los Amigos 0--Manuel Padilla scored both goals and Clay Monroe had seven saves to record his second consecutive shutout for Ocean View (2-1).

Trabuco Hills 2, No. 5 Esperanza 1--Peter Padayachee scored two first-half goals and Jay Arnston stopped five of six shots as Trabuco Hills (2-2) handed Esperanza its first loss of the season.

In the Irvine girls’ soccer tournament:

No. 1 Capistrano Valley 6, No. 6 Woodbridge 1--The Cougars scored four unanswered goals in the second half in the first-round game. Chandra King had three goals and Lindsay Greco two for Capistrano Valley (2-0).
