Newport Harbor Advances in Girls’ Water Polo

Alden Moore scored three goals for Newport Harbor as the Sailors defeated El Dorado, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the Villa Park girls’ water polo tournament Friday.

Jozelyn Mandarino had two goals and Jenna Barto one for Newport Harbor (4-1).

El Dorado fell to 2-1.

In an earlier game, Moore scored six goals to help defeat Villa Park B, 10-6. Barto and Catherine Gregg each had two goals. Newport Harbor will play the winner of the Canyon-Costa Mesa game today at 11 a.m. in the semifinals.

In the Magnolia girls’ water polo tournament:

Cypress 4, Long Beach Millikan 3 (OT)--Lindsey Sampson scored two goals for Cypress (3-3) in the third-round victory.

In the Burbank Burroughs boys’ soccer tournament:

Servite 2, Pasadena La Salle 0--Javier Vallejo and Matt Terry each scored one goal for Servite in the quarterfinal victory.

In the Irvine boys’ soccer tournament:

No. 8 Woodbridge 1, San Clemente 1--Daniel Chung scored for Woodbridge (2-0-1) with an 18-yard volley that flicked off goalkeeper Kevin Mehrens’ hand to tie the score in the last four minutes. Chad Daines scored midway through the second half for San Clemente (2-0-1), heading a throw-in into the net.

No. 10 Laguna Hills 3, No. 4 Saddleback 2--Bryan Doi scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 20th minute for Laguna Hills (2-2-1), which led, 3-0, at halftime. Noe Arreola made 10 saves for Saddleback (3-1).

Huntington Beach 0, Laguna Beach 0--Ryan Hopkins made eight saves for Huntington Beach (1-2-1). Mike Labeda made eight saves for Laguna Beach.

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

No. 3 Mater Dei 5, Newport Harbor 4--Mater Dei had four players score in its victory over Newport Harbor (2-2). The Monarchs (2-0-2) rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit.

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

Dana Hills 1, No. 6 Fountain Valley 1--Nick Tolman scored his fourth goal of the season to give Fountain Valley (3-2-1) a 1-0 halftime lead. Josh Good tied the score for Dana Hills on a penalty kick in the 60th minute.

No. 7 Capistrano Valley 4, Christchurch (New Zealand) 1--Josh Phalen scored two goals in a victory for Capistrano Valley (4-1).

Christchurch, which is on its summer break, is on a five-game tour in Southern California.

Bolsa Grande 8, Whittier Christian 3--Freshmen Fernando Granado and Humberto Oliva each scored two goals for Bolsa Grande (2-3). Granado had two assists and Oliva one. Whittier Christian is 1-3.

Brea Olinda 2, Cerritos 0--Mark Becher had six saves in his first shutout for Brea Olinda (3-1). Brian Flores and Andrew Dratkowski each scored goals.

Canyon 0, Marina 0--Goalkeeper Ryan Keyes made four saves to record his second shutout this season for Canyon (1-1-1). Joel Calcagno shut out Canyon with six saves for Marina (0-2-1).

Century 3, Tustin 0--Peter Espinoza’s goal at the 53-minute mark was the winning goal for Century. Espinoza scored two goals.

Costa Mesa 0, Westminster 0--James Daniels stopped a penalty kick with five minutes remaining to ensure his first shutout of the season for host Westminster (0-1-2). Westminster’s Jaime Espinoza took a shot which barely missed the right post 10 minutes earlier.

Carlos Ceron made five saves in the game for Costa Mesa (2-1-1) and punched away several crosses early in the game.

Garden Grove 1, Bellflower 0--Sam Chittenden’s goal at the 47-minute mark was the difference for Garden Grove (2-2) in its victory over visiting Bellflower.

Sonora 2, Villa Park 1--Nathan Ballard headed in a corner kick by Jose Camarillo to win the game in the last minute for Sonora (4-0). Julio Laguna scored four minutes earlier for the Raiders on an assist from Jacob Boggs.

Brian Larios scored for Villa Park (2-3) and Charlie Bingham had 10 saves.

In the Irvine girls’ soccer tournament:

No. 4 Esperanza 2, No. 9 El Toro 1--Stephanie Freeman and Stacy Jarne each scored first-half goals for Esperanza (5-0). Freeman’s goal was her seventh of the season. El Toro is 2-1.

In the Magnolia girls’ soccer tournament:

Kennedy 5, Orange 0--Hilary Poan scored two goals in her second consecutive game for Kennedy (2-3-1).
