Capistrano Valley Again Defeats No. 3 Esperanza

Two second-half goals for Capistrano Valley proved to be the difference as the top-ranked Cougars defeated No. 3 Esperanza, 2-1, in nonleague girls’ soccer Tuesday.

Megan Abbamonto and Janelle Hillseth scored early in the second half to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. It was the second victory over the Aztecs (6-2) in a week for Capistrano Valley (6-0), which also defeated Esperanza, 1-0, in the semifinals of the Irvine Tournament.

In other nonleague girls’ soccer:

No. 2 Mission Viejo 2, Irvine 0--Hannah Cochrun needed to make just one save to earn the shutout for visiting Mission Viejo (3-0-1).

No. 7, Los Alamitos 1, Lakewood Mayfair 0--Susan Palmer scored from the top of the box with 20 minutes remaining for Los Alamitos (4-0-1). Goalkeeper Jenny Willemse had four saves in recording her second shutout.

No. 10 Canyon 7, Anaheim 1--Michelle Bannister scored four goals and Rachelle Locke added two for Canyon (3-2). Rosa Palomino scored for Anaheim (2-3-1).

San Clemente 4, Carlsbad 3--Tracy Walla scored late in the game to lift San Clemente (2-3) past Carlsbad.

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

No. 6 Saddleback 4, Century 2--Jose Retiz scored two first-half goals and Tomas Serna had another as Saddleback (4-1) built a 3-0 halftime lead.

Bolsa Grande 1, Fullerton 1--Daniel Granado scored in the halfway through the second half to tie the game for Bolsa Grande (2-3-1). Soren Clark scored in the first half for Fullerton (0-2-3).
