Boys’ basketball--The game Monday between Sylmar and North Hollywood highs ended when Sylmar Coach Bort Escoto told officials that it was against the rules to have his team play without its head coach. Escoto was ejected after receiving his second technical foul of the game.

The Indians missed four key free throws and lost to Pasadena Marshall, 68-63, in overtime in the regional championship game of the Bell-Jeff tournament.

Marshall (6-3) will play La Canada, winner of the La Canada/St. Francis tournament, tonight for the all-around championship of the Bell-Jeff/La Canada/St. Francis tournament.

The Indians (7-3) led, 56-54, with 23 seconds to play, but Jeremy Cartee missed the first free throw in a one-and-one situation.

But the Eagles made seven of nine in the fourth quarter and six of eight in overtime.

Burroughs was up, 56-50, with under two minutes to play in regulation when its lead evaporated.

Aaron Taylor sank both of his free throws with 1:50 to play and, with 34 seconds left, Taylor grabbed a rebound and scored to pull Marshall to within 56-54.

Kevin Krose scored 23 points for Burroughs.

Devarian Mackey scored 21 points and Miles Alexander added 17 for Marshall, which won its fifth consecutive game.

Arenas scored 13 first-quarter points, including a steal and layup with 1:05 left that put the Lancers up, 33-7.

“I just wanted to win a game and move on to the next one,” said Arenas, who had 12 assists, 10 rebounds and 10 steals.

The Grant scoring record was 41 points by Danny Enowitz in 1987 and Ronald Patterson in 1995.

Arenas was coming off his worst performance as a Lancer, scoring 12 points in a loss to Marshall.

He did most of his damage Monday against guard Ruben Douglas, who has committed to Arizona.

“What was really impressive is that he came back against arguably the best guard in the Valley,” said Howard Levine, Grant’s coach. “It was quite a duel. You guys can decide who won.”
