Simi Valley Ends Vegas Trip on Losing Note

Rafael Berumen scored 33 points and Brett Michel added 22 for Simi Valley High, but the Pioneers fell to Las Vegas, 86-84, in a consolation game of the Las Vegas boys’ basketball tournament Tuesday.

Berumen made 14 of 20 field goals and also grabbed nine rebounds for Simi Valley (9-2), the top-ranked team in The Times’ regional poll.

Michel made seven of 11 field goals and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Branduinn Fullove added 19 points and five assists for the Pioneers.

The efforts of the Simi Valley trio were not enough to offset Ronnie Jones’ 42 points for Las Vegas (8-1).

Mario Finley added 15 points for Las Vegas.

Harvard-Westlake 65, San Diego Rancho Bernardo 60--Russell Lakey scored 21 points and Victor Munoz added 18 for the Wolverines (9-1) in a consolation game in the Las Vegas tournament.

Rancho Bernardo 70, Newbury Park 52--Luther Staine scored 12 points for the Panthers (10-4) in a consolation game in the Las Vegas tournament.

Westlake 57, Crespi 52--The Warriors rallied from a 16-point, third-quarter deficit in a pool-play game of the Ventura tournament.

Drew Stewart hit a three-point shot for the Warriors ( 6-4) to tie the game at 44-44.

Down, 36-20, after Crespi scored the first eight points of the third quarter, Westlake rallied behind Joey Cuppari and Jake DeGennaro, who scored 12 points each.

Stewart finished with eight points for the Warriors.

Tim McDonough scored 16 for Crespi (4-6).

Campbell Hall 61, Cerritos Valley Christian 59--Josh Glass scored 21 points and Brandon Woodard added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Vikings (8-2) in a nonleague game at Campbell Hall.

Montclair Prep 84, Kilpatrick 48--Rocky Steryo scored 21 points--including five three-pointers--and had 10 assists in a nonleague game at Montclair Prep.

Steryo has made 51 three-point baskets this season.

Jed Hall had 17 points and 11 rebounds for Montclair Prep (7-3).

Jules Thompson added 14 points for the Mounties.

Keoki Williams scored 11 points for Kilpatrick (0-5).

Agoura 56, Buena 54--Marcus Helfman scored 18 points for the Chargers in a pool-play game of the Ventura tournament.

With Buena down by two points, Ryan Fay purposely missed a free throw with four seconds left, but Agoura rebounded the ball.

Fay finished with 24 points for the Bulldogs (3-7).

Garrett Lepisto scored 16 for Agoura, which led at the end of the third quarter, 46-37.
