The No. 2 pick in baseball’s amateur draft last month, J.D. Drew, plans to sign a contract with the St. Paul Saints of the independent Northern League.

Drew, an outfielder who has been unable to come to terms with the Philadelphia Phillies, worked out with the Saints before Thursday night’s home game against Duluth-Superior but did not immediately sign a contract.

“Marty Scott [the Saints’ manager] and I agreed I should be ready to play before I sign,” Drew told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “I haven’t played for a month, except for a couple sessions in the batting cage.”

Phillie General Manager Lee Thomas said that signing with the Saints “has got to help him, but I would prefer it to be with us. We just hope he doesn’t get hurt.”

A former San Francisco Giant scout accused of demanding sex from young players did not meet with a prosecutor as scheduled Friday.

Luis Rosa, 51, had been ordered to return to the Dominican Republican and appear before the prosecutor in San Pedro de Macoris, the 60 miles west of Santo Domingo, where the sexual abuse complaint was filed against him in court by eight players.

The Dominican players, ranging in age from 18 to 21, accused Rosa of demanding sex from them. When they refused, they were kicked out of the training camp, they alleged.

Rosa resigned from the Giants on June 13. Both the Giants and Major League Baseball are investigating the allegations.
