Price, Campbell Granted Extension

John Price, men’s volleyball coach at Cal State Northridge, and his assistant, Jeff Campbell, were granted an extension until Friday to accept severance pay offers from the university.

Price and Campbell received the extension from last Thursday’s noon deadline after they asked Northridge administrators for more time to consult with faculty union representatives.

Men’s volleyball was eliminated on June 11 for budget and gender-equity concerns.

Neither coach has decided whether to accept terms of the severance packages, which they said were substantially less than expected.

Price was offered four months salary while Campbell was offered six months.

Each coach would have to teach nine classes at Northridge.

Going own way: Agoura High baseball Coach Bruce Beck said Thursday that the school is withdrawing its base-school affiliation with the Agoura Oaks Legion team, which is comprised largely of players from Agoura and Oak Park.

Beck said the move is unrelated to Agoura Oaks’ recent player-eligibility problems that required the team to forfeit 10 victories and stand at 0-21 through Thursday. Agoura Oaks plays in District 20.

“We want to have an Agoura-only team playing in District 16 next season,” Beck said. “That way we can play Marmonte League competition during the summer.”

Take II: Laura Qualls, The Times’ 1997 girls’ soccer player of the year, will play at Sonoma State next season. The Division II school does not offer athletic scholarships.

Qualls, who had 31 goals and 24 assists and helped the Indians to the Southern Section Division I title match, chose the Cossacks over Cal State Northridge.

Enough: Charlie Hatfield, an American Legion baseball Area 6 co-chairman for the past five seasons, said this will be his last in that position.

“I’m 75 and I want to coach [American Legion] for four or five years after this so I’m stepping down,” Hatfield said.

Hatfield, who has been involved in American Legion for more than 40 years, resigned at the end of last season after he was overruled on the disqualification of two players in a residency issue.

“But [Legion officials] said I had a year left on my contract and that Legionnaires don’t quit so I came back,” Hatfield said.

Making a splash: The Southern California Stealth was 4-0 in pool play in the opening round of the Colorado Fireworks tournament at Olympic Park in Denver.

The Stealth defeated Oak Park, Ill., 14-1, Vancouver, 7-3, Phoenix, 4-0, and Arizona, 9-0.

Maureen Le Cocq pitched a perfect game against Arizona.
