Agriculture Group Raises Cash for Scouts

Ventura County Agriculture for Scouting raised more than $30,000 for Boy Scouts of America’s local character, leadership and physical fitness youth development programs. About 40 area growers donated proceeds from the sale of produce and 30 agricultural vendors made cash donations. The fund-raising program is held annually.

Saticoy Recycling Receives ‘Match’ Award * Saticoy Recycling received a 1996 “Match of the Year” award from the California Integrated Waste Management Board, an honor recognizing outstanding recycling practices. Over the past two years Saticoy Recycling, operated by Rita Gonzales, collected more than 550 tons of waste materials, which in turn was sold to other businesses for reuse. Under the California Materials Exchange program, the company sold plastics, glass and lumber. The reusable refuse was in turn used to make fire logs, decorations and other products.

Conejo Valley Arts Council Names Directors * The Arts Council of the Conejo Valley announced its 1997-98 board of directors.

Diabetes Organization Inducts Officers * The Ventura County Chapter of the American Diabetes Assn. inducted new officers on the board of directors.

They are Peter Tafoya, president; Gloria Chinea, vice president of programs; Yvone Gallegos Bodle, vice president of development; Jeanette Villanueva-Walker, public relations; Susan Thomas, secretary.

20 Accepted Into Summer School for Arts * Twenty art students from Ventura County were accepted into the 1997 California State Summer School for the Arts held at California Institute of the Arts in Valencia. Funded with private contributions, the program provides a head start to teenagers seeking careers in the arts and entertainment industry. Of the 1,283 applicants, 554 were accepted for this year’s program.

The county students are Fernando Barcelona, Jesse Bolton, Samuel Casebolt, Cory Chestnut, Erika Fortner, Michael Fortunato, Travis Hedge Coke, Heather Heidel, Charles Kessler, Jinna Kim, Bill Lascher, Justin Murray, Meryl O’Connor, Michelle Ogle, Marin Pearce, Dennis Peterson, Matthew Plomell, Ian Ramsay, Elka Weber and Rita Ziman.
