Ian Boys, a 6-foot-7 center who was a Times’ All-Ventura County second-team selection at Buena High last season as a junior, said Tuesday he is transferring to Simi Valley.

Boys’ transfer marks the third year in a row that Simi Valley will begin the season with a touted incoming player.

Last season, 6-8 Rafael Berumen transferred from Pomona High and averaged 23 points and 10.7 rebounds as a sophomore.

In 1995-96, the Pioneers were led by Pero Vasiljevic, a 6-9 exchange student from Australia who averaged 24.6 points and 11.6 rebounds.

Berumen and Vasiljevic were each named The Times’ Ventura County player of the year.

Buena Coach Glen Hannah was stunned by the transfer because Boys had played for Buena in games Friday and Saturday. He was particularly upset because he heard about the transfer Saturday night at a birthday party he was attending.

“I’m hurt and almost feeling a little used,” Hannah said. “Especially the way I found out about it didn’t make me feel good.”

Boys said his transfer was a hardship case. He said he will live with Robert and Marianne Fullove, who he said have become his legal guardians.

The Fulloves’ son, Branduinn, is a 6-5 guard who averaged 16.3 points for Simi Valley (23-4) as a freshman last season.

“I think that the issue of a guardianship is a private matter and has nothing to do with anybody except for the Fulloves and ourselves,” said Julie Boys, Ian’s mother. “They’re good friends of ours who we’ve known for five years.”

Boys, who averaged 12 points, eight rebounds and 2.5 blocks for Buena (12-13) last season, will join a Simi Valley team that returns its three leading scorers, including 6-6 sophomore-to-be Brett Michel.
