Garden Grove Player Advances in Tennis

Dave Bohannon of Garden Grove defeated Owen Gillen of Cathedral City, 6-1, 7-5, to advance to the quarterfinals in men’s 50 singles at the U.S. Tennis Assn. National Men’s 50 and 55 hard court championships Thursday at the Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach.

Bohannon also teamed with Dennis Trout of Solvang to advance to the men’s 50 doubles quarterfinals.

Jerry De Ainza of Irvine lost to Dean Schlobohm of Moraga, 6-1, 6-3, in the men’s 50 singles bracket. Mission Viejo’s Jerry Edgar and Dana Point’s Herm Ahlers were also eliminated in the fourth round of the men’s 55 singles bracket.

Nicholas Bollini of Yorba Linda lost to Richard Moir of Buderim, Australia, in a playoff Thursday in the boys’ 13-14 division of the Junior World Golf Championships at Mission Trials in San Diego. Bollini shot par 71, while Moir shot 68 to force the playoff.

Candie Kung of Fountain Valley is tied for fifth after three rounds of the girls’ 15-17 division at Torrey Pines North. Kung and Dorothy Delasin of Daly City are five-over par, nine behind leader Wei Yun-Jye of Taiwan.

Kevin Stadler, son of PGA Tour pro Craig, leads the boys’ 15-17 division by two strokes after three rounds.

Kellee Booth, Alicia Allison were among the players who won first-round matches at the Trans National Women’s Amateur Championship at Houndslake Country Club in Aiken, N.C.

Booth, from Coto de Caza and Arizona State, defeated Stefanie Reynolds of Landenberg, Pa., 9 and 7 on the 6,172-yard par-72 course. Allison, from Santa Ana and Duke, defeated Tiffany Faucette of Ormond Beach, Fla., 2 and 1.

The tournament continues with second and third-round matches today followed by quarterfinal and semifinal matches Saturday. The 36-hole final will be Sunday.

The Seal Beach Rough Water Swim, one of California’s oldest ocean races, will take place Saturday at the Seal Beach Pier.

The 10-mile men’s and women’s race, which highlights the 29th annual event, will start at 6 a.m. on the west side of the Huntington Beach Pier and finish at the Seal Beach Pier.

Other events are the men’s and women’s three- and one-mile swims, age-group races including 200 yard (boys and girls, 7-8); 400 yard (boys and girls, 9-10); 800 yard (boys and girls, 11-12) and 1,200 yard (boys and girls, 12-14) events. An exhibition one- and 10-mile men and women paddleboard event will also take place.
