Girl, 1, Pulled From Pool in Critical Condition

A 1-year-old girl was in critical condition Saturday after she was pulled from a backyard swimming pool, authorities said.

Firefighters summoned to a home in the 11900 block of West Carl Street about 11:30 a.m. found the infant with a pulse and breathing on her own, said Jim Wells, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman.

Before rescuers arrived, Wells said, a person at the residence performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the girl, who had no pulse and was unable to breathe when she was taken out of the water.

The girl was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, Wells said.

The near-drowning underscores the need for homeowners to take pool-safety precautions, Wells said.

Children should be strictly supervised at all times and someone on the premises should know CPR, he said. There also should be a barrier between the house and pool, a pool or gate alarm and a portable telephone at poolside.

“It only takes a few seconds to fall in the water,” Wells said. “But sometimes a few seconds can be too long.”
