Late Plays Keep No. 22 Toledo Undefeated, 35-28

Chris Wallace connected on an 11-yard scoring pass play with Brock Kreitzburg with 24 seconds left and No. 22-ranked Toledo batted away a pass in the end zone on the game’s last play to defeat Miami of Ohio, 35-28, in a Mid-American Conference game on Saturday at Toledo, Ohio.

Wallace, who was 24 of 36 for 364 yards, threw four touchdown passes as Toledo (8-0 overall, 6-0 in conference) continued its best season since 1971. Miami of Ohio fell to 6-3 and 4-2.

Marshall 45, Central Michigan 17--Chad Pennington threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns and Randy Moss caught two touchdown passes, giving him 20, as the Thundering Herd rolled to victory at Mount Pleasant, Mich.

Moss finished with 193 yards in seven catches for Marshall (7-2 overall, 5-1 Mid-American). Central Michigan fell to (2-8, 1-6).

Syracuse 40, No. 17 West Virginia 10--Kevin Johnson connected with Jim Turner on a 50-yard touchdown pass play off a reverse early in the third quarter and Jason Poles returned an interception 96 yards for a score moments later as the Orangemen (6-3, 3-1 in the Big East) beat the Mountaineers (6-2, 3-2) at Syracuse, N.Y.

No. 23 Virginia Tech 37, Alabama-Birmingham 0--Lamont Pegues rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown and Shayne Graham kicked three field goals as the Hokies (6-2) rolled to victory at Blacksburg, Va. UAB is 3-5.

No. 24 Southern Mississippi 24, Cincinnati 17--Lee Roberts threw two touchdown passes to Sherrod Gideon, the last coming with 5:55 to play, to rally the Golden Eagles (6-2, 4-0 in Conference USA) to victory at Cincinnati (6-3, 1-3).

Miami 42, Arkansas State 10--Edgerrin James had touchdown runs of 39 and 41 yards as the Hurricanes (4-4) exceeded the 300-yard rushing mark for the third consecutive week in a victory at Miami. Arkansas State dropped to 1-8.

EAST

John Matich redeemed himself after missing two field goals and an extra point by kicking a 35-yard field goal with 1:31 left as Boston College (3-6, 3-3 in the Big East) rallied to edge Pittsburgh (4-4, 2-2), 22-21 at Boston. . . . Stacey Mack rushed for 164 yards and three touchdowns as Temple (3-6, 3-3 in the Big East) romped past Rutgers, 48-7, at Philadelphia. Rutgers is 0-9 and 0-6. . . . Flanker Terence Patterson scored three first-half touchdowns--two on passes from Rich Linden--and Harvard (6-1, 4-0) took sole possession of first place in the Ivy League with a 24-0 victory over Dartmouth (5-2, 3-1), at Hanover, N.H. . . . Sean Morey caught three touchdowns and set a single-game team record with 221 yards receiving in leading Brown (5-2, 2-2) to a 37-12 Ivy League victory over Cornell (3-4, 1-3) at Providence, R.I. . . . Tailback Jim Finn scored three touchdowns to lead Penn (4-3, 3-1 in the Ivy League) to a 26-7 victory over Yale (1-6, 0-3) at New Haven, Conn. . . . Bobby Thomason threw two touchdown passes and Norman Hayes set a school record for rushing attempts with 42 in Columbia’s 17-0 Ivy League upset of Princeton at New York. Hayes finished with 175 yards rushing for Columbia (3-4, 2-2). Princeton is 4-3 and 1-3.

Tevell Jones pushed Justin McCareins out of bounds at the two-yard line as time expired, salvaging Ohio’s 35-30 victory over Northern Illinois at De Kalb, Ill. Ohio is 8-1 and 5-0, Northern Illinois is 0-9 and 0-6. . . . James Terrell rushed for two touchdowns and 146 yards to power Ball State (4-6, 5-2) over Akron, 31-14, in a Mid-American Conference game at Muncie, Ind. The Zips fell to 1-8 and 1-5. . . . Eugene Baker caught three touchdown passes from Jose Davis as Kent (3-6, 3-4 in the Mid-American) rallied in the second half and defeated Bowling Green, 29-20, at Kent, Ohio. The Falcons are 3-7 and 3-4.

East Carolina (3-5, 2-2 in Conference USA) returned two third-quarter interceptions for touchdowns to erase a 17-point halftime deficit en route to a 45-31 victory over Louisville (1-8, 0-4) at Louisville, Ky. . . . Bernard Oden threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third as Memphis (3-2, 1-2 in Conference USA) defeated Houston (3-5, 2-1), 24-3, at Memphis, Tenn. . . . Kond Allen scored on a two-yard run with 33 seconds remaining as Northeast Louisiana (4-6) rallied for a 45-41 victory over Central Florida (4-6) at Monroe, La. . . . Shaun King passed for three touchdowns, O’Kie Woods scored three times and Jamaican Dartez rushed for 167 yards and a score as Tulane (5-3) rolled to a 56-0 victory over Southwestern Louisiana (1-8) at Lafayette, La.

Brian Ah Yat completed 34 of 49 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns and Greg Fitzgerald intercepted three first-quarter passes in Montana’s 21-13 Big Sky Conference victory over Cal State Northridge at Missoula, Mont. The Grizzlies (5-3, 3-2) struck quickly, taking a 7-0 lead 26 seconds into the game and never looked back against the Matadors (4-5, 2-3). . . . Matt Sauk threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Nakia Jenkins with 1:14 remaining to give Utah State (5-4) a 24-20 victory over Boise State at Logan, Utah. . . .
