Ventura Dives Into Playoffs, 11-7

Ventura College, ranked seventh in the state, scored an 11-7 victory over Riverside on Wednesday behind the offensive play of David Ford and Zack Finley in the first round of the Southern California regional men’s water polo tournament at Ventura.

Ford scored two of his three goals in the first quarter and Finley also had three goals for the Pirates (24-9).

Paul Caldenty and Bill Bruininga each scored twice and goalie Curtis Tolmie made 14 saves for Ventura.

The Pirates will play Saddleback on Friday in a quarterfinal game.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Harvard-Westlake 23, Crespi 3--The Wolverines (19-4, 4-0 in Mission League play) had five players with three goals each and claimed the league championship at Pierce College.

Harvard-Westlake scored at least five goals in each quarter, including seven in the first quarter.

Brendan Connolly had 14 saves for the Wolverines, who are ranked third in the Southern Section Division I rankings.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Golden League final--Senior Danielle Day finished first, freshman Shell Blevins was second and junior Carly Harrill ran fourth to pace Quartz Hill to a 20-65 victory over runner-up Highland on the Rancho Vista course in Palmdale.

Day, sixth in last year’s state Division I championships, clocked 20:14 over the three-mile course, with Blevins at 20:44 and Harrill at 21:18.

Freshmen Jennifer Yadon was seventh in 22:22 and Katie Schettig was eighth in 22:24 to round out the scoring for Quartz Hill, the No. 3-ranked team in the Southern Section Division I poll.

Sophomore Rachel Guerrero of Highland finished third in 20:56.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Providence d. Buckley, 15-6, 15-7, 15-1--Katie Malloy, Jill Vander Borght and Cathleen Reuter each had six kills for the Pioneers (14-3, 11-2) in a Liberty League match at Providence.

Montclair Prep d. First Lutheran, 15-3, 15-4, 15-0--Courtney McLaughlin served all 15 points in the third game for the Mounties (11-5) in a nonleague match at Montclair Prep.

Stacy Green had nine kills for Montclair Prep, while McLaughlin finished with 10 aces.

GIRLS TENNIS

Camarillo 13, San Marcos 5--Bettina Rettenmaier swept her sets at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-0, 6-1, to lead a singles sweep by the Scorpions (12-1) in a nonleague match at San Marcos (11-8).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC San Diego d. Cal Lutheran, 15-9, 15-9, 15-4--Katherine Brynjestad had 15 kills, seven digs and three aces for the Tritons (21-5) in a nonconference match at San Diego.

Cal Lutheran was outhit, .284 to .024, by San Diego, which recorded its school-record 17th consecutive victory.

Jamey Light had 11 digs for the Regals (7-11).
