Santa Ana Is Alone in 1st After Beating Orange Coast

Santa Ana scored 21 points in the second quarter of a 34-14 victory over Orange Coast in a Mission Conference Central Division football game Saturday.

The Dons (5-3, 4-0) took sole possession of first place in the division.

Orange Coast (0-8, 0-4) took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter on Joe Khamis’ 30-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Chad Collins, but the Pirates did not keep the lead long.

Tramel Robinson took over for the Dons, scoring on runs of six and seven yards to give Santa Ana a 14-7 lead halfway through the second quarter. Robinson finished with 105 yards rushing in 19 carries.

The Dons capped the first-half scoring on a two-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Archie Lappin to tight end Aaron Kenney with 1 minute 57 seconds left.

Antonio Leone cut Santa Ana’s lead to 21-14 on a 10-yard touchdown reception from Collins with 7:08 left in the third quarter.

The Dons put the game away two minutes later on Spencer Frost’s eight-yard touchdown run.

Anousith Wilaikul kicked two field goals (47 and 28 yards) in the fourth quarter for Santa Ana.

In another Central Division game:

Riverside 52, Golden West 21--Marcus Sims rushed for 172 yards and two touchdowns for Riverside. Teammate Robert Farias completed nine of 14 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns.

The Tigers (4-4, 3-1) set the tone in the first quarter. Andre Pepper intercepted a John Frank pass and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 Riverside lead. Then Brian Brew caught a one-yard touchdown pass from Farias.

Farias’ second touchdown pass, a 25-yarder to Lloyd Nolen, gave Riverside a 21-0 lead with 1:59 left in the first quarter.

After Riverside took a 28-0 lead on a one-yard touchdown run by Terrence Wilson, Golden West (2-6, 1-4) finally scored when Paul Tessier caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Frank with three seconds left in the first half.
