Golden West Wins Regional Water Polo Title
The Golden West men’s water polo team won the Southern California regional championship game, 14-5, over Chaffey on Saturday at Long Beach Belmont Plaza.
Mike Peetz scored five goals and Peter Janov four for the top-ranked Rustlers (33-0), who will start play in the state tournament at 8 a.m. on Friday against Merced at Ohlone College in Fremont.
In the Southern California women’s water polo regional:
Golden West 13, Orange Coast 5--Lisa Saenz, the state’s leading scorer, scored four goals as top-ranked Golden West (33-1) won the final. Nadine Akers scored three goals for the Rustlers.
Golden West plays Sierra (14-13) in the opening round of the state championship on Friday.
Karen Helm scored two goals for Orange Coast (23-8-1). The Pirates also advanced and will play Modesto (20-8) in the first round.
In the Southern California men’s cross-country regional championship:
Saddleback finishes fourth--Dan Gaston led the Gauchos with a 10th-place finish in 20 minutes 37 seconds over the four-mile course at Irvine Regional Park. The team had 180 points, 60 points ahead of Santa Ana, which finished fifth. Alex Reyes, who finished in 25th place in 21:01, was the top finisher for the Dons.
In the Southern California women’s cross-country regional championship:
Orange Coast wins--The Pirates placed five runners among the top 10 for a team score of 26. Donna Harris won the race in 19:14 over the 3.2-mile course at Irvine Regional Park.
