Matadors Not Half Bad but Fall

Sometimes statistics don’t tell the whole story.

Cal State Northridge played markedly better in the second half of its women’s basketball opener Friday night against Texas Arlington, yet watched a three-point halftime deficit grow into a 66-50 nonconference defeat at Northridge.

The Matadors made just 23% of their shots in the first half and were outrebounded by 10, but only trailed, 26-23, at intermission.

Northridge improved to 43% from from the field, scored more points and had nearly twice as many assists in the second half, but watched Texas Arlington steadily pull away.

The problem was, the Mavericks played better in the second half, too.

Six-foot-four center Tanya Strong, plagued by foul trouble in the first half, scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half for Texas Arlington.

Edniesha Curry had 15 points, and Viveca Lof scored 11 and Sarah Bell had 10 for the Matadors, who were outrebounded, 48-25.
